The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Wichita, KS: $82,820) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- MDR pairs endpoint security software with a staffed operations center that reviews alerts day and night, hunts for intruders and can cut an infected computer off the network, billed for each protected device.
Managed IT services in Wichita: per user or per device
Per employee 12, a 25-person Wichita office lands between $30,000 and $75,000 over a year. Shops with more machines than people are often quoted per device instead, and the band most providers used in Kaseya's 2023 benchmark was $50 to $100 per device monthly 4.
Wichita IT pay trails the $99,130 national median for administrators 24. The May 2025 metro medians were $82,820 for a systems administrator and $52,480 for a user support specialist 56. Since benefits are 30% of private employers' compensation costs 7, the administrator costs about $118,300 a year by our calculation. Plants that run two shifts need coverage one person cannot give, which is why many keep an internal lead and outsource the rest. Tier contents are compared in our managed IT cost guide.
Wichita's aircraft industry and its suppliers
Aircraft makers top Wichita's employer list. The Greater Wichita Partnership's September 2026 list puts Boeing at 13,000 local full-time equivalents and Textron Aviation, maker of Beechcraft and Cessna aircraft, at 11,000 8. Next come McConnell Air Force Base (6,000), Wichita State University (5,500), Ascension Via Christi (3,300), Wesley Healthcare (3,100), Koch's global headquarters (3,000) and the National Institute for Aviation Research (1,800) 8. McConnell's 22nd Air Refueling Wing flies KC-46A tankers, and the base and its tenants reported a $1,002 million local economic impact in fiscal 2023 9.
Sedgwick County had 12,710 establishments in 2023, 3,292 with 10 to 49 employees and 769 with 50 to 249 10. Machine shops, composite fabricators, tooling makers and engineering firms make up much of the aircraft supply chain around them. Only 149 county businesses fell under computer systems design and related services 10, and software and consulting shops are among them.
For these companies, IT and production are tied together. CNC machines, inspection stations and label printers often run older Windows versions that cannot be patched on the office schedule. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 10 on October 14, 2025; commercial Extended Security Updates now cost $61 a machine in year one and double every year 11.

Get my Wichita quoteDefense work: CMMC scoping for plant floors
Wichita suppliers whose contracts include DFARS 252.204-7012 must protect Controlled Unclassified Information, such as controlled drawings, under NIST SP 800-171 23. DoD says it is still enforcing NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 and Phase 1 self-assessments, even though it suspended third-party CMMC certification on July 13, 2026 with no new start date 12.
Plant equipment gets its own category in CMMC scoping. Operational technology, test equipment and similar devices count as Specialized Assets: they are documented in the system security plan but not assessed against the other Level 2 requirements 13. Separating the plant network from the office network, and keeping CUI inside a defined enclave, keeps the assessed footprint small 14. Our CMMC overview and manufacturing IT page explain the steps. A contracting officer or counsel can tell you which clauses your award actually carries.
Kansas data breach rules and security duties
Kansas puts no number of days on breach notice. First comes a prompt, good-faith inquiry; if it concludes misuse happened or probably will, affected Kansans are told as fast as possible and without unreasonable delay 15. No agency filing is required, the Attorney General included, and the credit bureaus enter only if one mailing goes to more than 1,000 people 15. Encrypted or redacted data is exempt 15.
A separate Kansas law requires every business that holds personal information to keep reasonable security procedures suited to the data 16. It must also destroy records it no longer needs, for example by shredding or erasing, so they cannot be read 16. Only the Attorney General enforces it 16. Old drives pulled from retired shop PCs count.
No general consumer privacy statute has been enacted in Kansas, and none appears on the national tracker we checked in October 2026 17. Kansans filed 7,927 FBI IC3 complaints in 2025, fewer than Oklahomans' 11,964, yet reported larger losses: $147.3 million against Oklahoma's $131.9 million 18. See our Kansas breach law page.
Choosing a cybersecurity company in Wichita
A Wichita cybersecurity company, or the security arm of an MSP, should start with detection and recovery. Mainstream MDR is the $8 to $25 per machine figure in the table 19; a 2024 MSSP survey found full managed security bundles averaging $45 to $73 for each endpoint 20. Vulnerability exploitation was the leading entry point in the 2026 Verizon DBIR, behind 31% of breaches 21, which puts patching of internet-facing systems near the top of the list.
Ask any security provider:
- Who watches alerts at night, and can they isolate a machine without waking us?
- How will you protect plant equipment that cannot be patched?
- How often do you test restores, and can we see the results?
Our managed detection and response guide and backup and disaster recovery page go deeper.
Co-managed IT and picking a Wichita provider
Shops with their own IT manager can fill the gaps with co-managed support, which Meriplex's 2026 guide puts at $45 to $175 per employee monthly 22. Confirm that on-site help can reach every building, including on second shift, and that the contract says how visits are billed. Contract clauses worth a second read are in our MSP selection guide. Firms with sites in the region can compare Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Kansas City, or go to the managed IT services hub for other cities.
Common questions
How do Wichita providers price IT support?
What should I look for in a cybersecurity company in Wichita?
Round-the-clock monitoring with authority to isolate machines, a plan for plant equipment that cannot be patched, and regular restore tests. Mainstream MDR runs $8 to $25 per machine monthly 19.
Does Kansas require reporting a data breach to the state?
Do Wichita aircraft suppliers need CMMC?
What should a Wichita manufacturer expect from a managed service provider?
It runs the help desk, servers, backups and security for the office, and should also plan patching and network separation for shop-floor machines. Ask whether plant equipment is in scope before you sign.
What should a Wichita shop do about old Windows 10 machines?
Three options: replace them, wall them off on their own network, or pay for commercial Extended Security Updates, which cost $61 a machine in year one and double every year 11. Machines that run CNC or inspection software may need the isolation route until the vendor supports a newer system.
