Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands, TX: $101,430) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

IT services
IT services, in the small business sense, are the support, maintenance, security and planning work an outside provider performs on a company's computers, networks and software, either as a monthly managed contract or billed per project or hour.

Houston IT services and managed IT pricing

Many Houston providers sell IT services as a monthly managed contract, and published pricing guides put those at $100 to $250 per user per month 1, with security-heavy plans higher in some guides 4. The alternative, hourly break-fix support, typically costs $75 to $250 an hour 1 and gives you no monitoring between calls.

Houston's IT wages are close to the national median. The metro's May 2025 median was $101,430 for a network and computer systems administrator and $59,250 for a computer user support specialist 2. Once benefits are counted at the BLS share of 30% of compensation 3, the administrator costs about $144,900 a year by our calculation. A 25-person office would pay $30,000 to $75,000 for managed IT at published rates.

Companies with field crews, yards or plants should also ask for per-device pricing on rugged laptops, tablets and site networks. One provider's 2026 guide lists $50 to $100 per workstation and $100 to $400 per server 4. Our managed IT pricing guide covers both models.

Houston's economy: energy, medicine and the IT behind them

Harris County had 111,215 business establishments in 2023, with 25,030 employing 10 to 49 people and 6,675 employing 50 to 249 5. The county also had 2,169 computer systems design and related services establishments 5.

Two industries shape Houston IT more than any others:

  • Energy. HUD describes Houston as an international center for global energy markets, with 24 Fortune 500 headquarters in the metro 7. Oilfield service firms, engineering shops and suppliers run field sites, plant networks and connected equipment. That calls for remote site support and for keeping operational systems separate from office email.
  • Medicine. The Texas Medical Center has more than 100,000 employees, and Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist are among the metro's largest employers 7. Labs, specialty practices, billing firms and research vendors that work with them handle protected health information, so HIPAA compliance services are a frequent need.

The HUD profile behind these figures dates to 2021, so treat the employer counts as approximate. In August 2026 the Houston metro had about 240,400 manufacturing jobs and 73,300 in mining and logging (preliminary) 6. See IT for manufacturers for plant floor considerations.

Texas privacy, breach and biometric rules in Houston

A Houston business that suffers a breach has no more than 60 days to notify affected individuals, and must report to the Texas Attorney General within 30 days when 250 or more Texans are involved 8. Texas also expects reasonable procedures to protect sensitive personal information in the first place 8.

Other Texas rules worth knowing:

  • Texas Data Privacy and Security Act. In force since July 1, 2024, with no consumer-count threshold. SBA-defined small businesses are excluded, except they must get consent before selling sensitive data 9.
  • Biometric identifiers. Capturing fingerprints, hand or face data for a commercial purpose requires notice and consent, with Attorney General penalties up to $25,000 per violation 10. Ask counsel whether plant timeclocks or site access readers are covered.
  • Exemplary damages protection. SB 2610, effective September 1, 2025, shields businesses with fewer than 250 employees from punitive damages after a breach if they maintained a qualifying cybersecurity program 12. Conforming to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework is one way to qualify 12.

Your counsel can tell you which of these reach your business.

Cybersecurity services in Houston

Houston cybersecurity work splits into two jobs: protecting the office and protecting the sites. Texas residents filed 97,912 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025 and reported $1.83 billion in losses, second only to California 11. Business email compromise caused about $3.05 billion in reported losses nationally 11, a real risk for any supplier or contractor that pays large invoices.

For the office, the baseline is MFA, monitored endpoint detection and response, email filtering, tested backups and payment verification steps for finance staff. Mainstream managed detection and response costs $8 to $25 per endpoint per month 13. For field and plant sites, ask about separating control systems from the business network, securing remote access and keeping offline backups.

Hospital-linked vendors should expect patient data questionnaires. Our small business cybersecurity guide lists the controls in priority order, and backup and disaster recovery covers hurricane-season planning for systems and data.

IT consulting and co-managed IT for Houston firms

Houston firms with an IT manager or a small internal team often choose co-managed IT. One provider's published estimate puts it at $45 to $175 per user per month depending on whether it includes EDR, patching or a security operations center 14. Internal staff keep site and vendor relationships; the provider adds tooling and around-the-clock monitoring. See co-managed IT.

IT consulting covers one-time work, and outside consultants bill $150 to $250 an hour in one 2026 cost guide 15. Houston examples include separating operational networks from office systems, standing up a disaster recovery site out of the storm path, HIPAA risk analysis for medical vendors and post-acquisition IT integration. Finding a Houston provider that covers your sites

Houston's size and spread of industrial sites make coverage the first filter. Confirm which locations a provider will visit in person, and how quickly, before comparing price. Questions to ask:

  • Do you support field offices, yards or plants outside the city?
  • What is your plan for hurricane outages: remote access, backup power advice and cloud failover?
  • Have you supported HIPAA vendors or energy-sector clients of our size?
  • Who controls admin accounts and documentation if we part ways?

If you also have staff in Austin, San Antonio or Dallas, check that a single contract covers those sites too. The MSP selection guide has a longer checklist, and our managed IT services overview explains what agreements cover. Describe your sites in the form, and the one provider or advisory partner who receives it will reply within one business day.

Common questions

How much do IT services cost in Houston?

Managed IT services in Houston typically run $100 to $250 per user per month based on published pricing guides 1. Hourly break-fix support costs about $75 to $250 an hour 1. Project work such as a network redesign is quoted separately.

What is the salary of an IT support person in Houston?

The Houston metro median was $59,250 for a computer user support specialist and $101,430 for a systems administrator in May 2025 2. Counting benefits, the administrator comes to about $144,900 a year, our figure based on BLS data 3.

Do Houston medical vendors need HIPAA-ready IT?

Yes, if they create, receive or store protected health information for a covered entity. With the Texas Medical Center employing more than 100,000 people 7, many Houston labs, billing firms and software vendors fall into this group. A provider should support risk analysis, access controls and signed business associate agreements.

Does Texas require consent for biometric timeclocks?

Generally yes, if the device captures fingerprints or face geometry. Texas law requires notice and consent before capturing a biometric identifier for a commercial purpose, with penalties up to $25,000 per violation 10. Review any fingerprint or face-scan device with your provider and counsel.

When must a Houston company report a data breach?

Within 60 days to affected individuals, and within 30 days to the Texas Attorney General if 250 or more Texans are affected 8.

Is co-managed IT a good fit for Houston energy companies?

It often is, because internal staff usually know the field sites while a provider adds monitoring and security tools. A published co-managed range from one provider is $45 to $175 per user per month 14. Make sure the contract states who handles plant and site networks.
