Enterprise IT Services

Enterprise IT services are managed IT built for larger and multi-site organizations, adding 24/7 coverage, formal service management, change control and a dedicated account team. Published 2026 provider guides put managed IT for organizations of about 50 to 500 employees at $100 to $400 per user per month 1, or roughly $10,000 to $125,000 a month for 100 to 500 staff depending on service level 2.

Enterprise IT services
Enterprise IT services are outsourced IT operations, support, security and strategy delivered at the scale and formality larger organizations need, with 24/7 coverage, written service levels, change management, asset and configuration records, and a named account team.

What enterprise IT services are

Enterprise IT services are the same building blocks as small business managed IT (help desk, infrastructure, security, strategy) delivered with more process, more coverage hours and more documentation. The technology is often identical. What changes is how the work is run and proven.

The features that usually separate an enterprise-grade agreement:

  • Coverage around the clock. A network operations center watching systems 24/7, and a help desk that answers outside office hours.
  • Written service levels. Response and resolution targets by priority, measured and reported monthly, with remedies when they are missed.
  • Change management. Planned changes are logged, reviewed and scheduled, so a firewall update does not take down a site at 10 a.m.
  • Asset and configuration records. A maintained inventory of devices, licenses and how systems connect, which audits and incident response both depend on.
  • A named account team. A service manager for day-to-day issues and a strategic lead, often a virtual CIO, for budgets and roadmaps.
  • Evidence for auditors. Reports your auditors and insurers can rely on, and often the provider's own SOC report. SOC reports are CPA-issued assurance reports on a service organization's controls, used by customers to assess the risk of outsourcing 13.

If a provider cannot show you a sample monthly service report and its change process, it is not running enterprise-grade service, whatever the brochure says.

What changes above 250 staff

Above roughly 250 staff, IT stops being a set of tools and becomes an operation with its own team, budget and audit trail. Several thresholds arrive around this size.

Licensing. Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard and Premium support a maximum of 300 users 3. Past that, organizations move to enterprise plans: Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 E3 at $39 and E5 at $60 per user per month paid yearly, against $22 for Business Premium 43. For 300 users, the step from Business Premium to E3 adds about $61,200 a year in list price by our arithmetic. Microsoft FastTrack deployment help becomes available at 150 or more eligible licenses 5.

Internal staff. Most firms this size have their own IT people. One MSP's 2026 guide says organizations of 100 to 500 employees usually keep a small internal team of two to five people 2, which shifts the question from "who does IT" to "which parts do we hand off".

Security and compliance load. More users means more accounts to govern, more vendors with access, and customer contracts that ask for security evidence. Programs such as vCISO services and a 24/7 managed SOC usually enter the budget here.

Help desk volume. Ticket counts grow with headcount, and many larger firms move tier-one support to an outsourced help desk while keeping senior engineers in-house.

Enterprise IT for multi-site firms

Multi-site firms need the same standards at every location, plus someone accountable for the links between them. Gaps between sites are where outages and breaches tend to start.

What a multi-site scope should spell out:

  • A standard site build. The same firewall, switch and Wi-Fi models and configuration at each location, so problems are fixed once.
  • Network between sites. Internet circuits, backup connections, site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN, and who calls each carrier when a line drops.
  • On-site coverage. Which sites get scheduled visits, who handles hands-on work at remote locations, and the travel charges if any.
  • Inventory by site. Devices, licenses and network diagrams kept per location.
  • Recovery by site. How each location keeps working if its server, circuit or building is lost.

Ask providers how many locations they support for current clients of similar size, and whether a local partner does field work at distant sites. Our IT infrastructure services page covers network and server pricing in more detail.

Typical enterprise IT service scopes

Enterprise IT scopes fall into four common shapes, and larger organizations rarely buy all of it from one provider on one contract:

  1. Fully managed. The provider runs user support, infrastructure and security tooling. Published guides put this at $100 to $400 per user per month for organizations of 50 to 500 employees 1.
  2. Co-managed. The provider fills gaps around your team: after-hours coverage, monitoring tools, patching or project capacity. One provider's 2026 guide puts co-managed IT at $45 to $175 per user per month 6. Guides disagree on the saving versus fully managed: one says 20% to 30% less 2, another 30% to 50% less per user 1.
  3. Out-tasked functions. Specific services bought separately, such as 24/7 security monitoring, which one 2026 analysis puts at $5,000 to $25,000 a month for organizations of 100 to 1,000 employees 7, or managed detection and response priced per endpoint.
  4. Strategy only. A fractional IT leader; published vCIO rates run $2,000 to $10,000 a month on retainer 8.

Most mid-size firms end up with a mix: co-managed operations, an out-tasked SOC and a strategic lead.

Enterprise IT pricing models and the in-house comparison

Enterprise IT pricing is usually per user or per device for ongoing work, with extras for coverage hours and onboarding. One MSP's 2026 guide gives these figures 2:

  • Per-user tiers of $100 to $150 (basic), $150 to $225 (standard) and $225 to $350 (premium) a month.
  • For 100 to 500 employees, totals of $10,000 to $50,000 a month at the basic level and $25,000 to $125,000 at premium.
  • True 24/7 support with guaranteed response adds $25 to $50 per user per month.
  • Onboarding from $2,000 for a simple 10-person office to $25,000 or more for complex environments.
  • Three-year agreements that typically save 5% to 15% on monthly fees compared with month-to-month.

Another 2026 guide says a 100-person company should budget $15,000 to $35,000 a month, and that HIPAA requirements often raise managed IT costs 20% to 40% 1. Both are single providers' published figures, not survey data; see our managed IT price index for the full set.

The in-house alternative is a team, not one hire. BLS median wages for May 2025 were $175,140 for computer and information systems managers 9, $99,130 for network and computer systems administrators 10 and $61,860 for computer user support specialists 11. With benefits at 30% of total employer compensation 12, that three-person team costs about $480,200 a year including benefits, based on BLS data (our calculation), with no after-hours coverage and no cover for vacations.

When a mid-size business needs enterprise-grade service

A mid-size business needs enterprise-grade service when downtime, audits or the number of locations make informal IT a measurable risk, not when it crosses a headcount line. Signs you are there:

  • Operations run outside office hours, or customers are in other time zones.
  • You have three or more locations, or staff spread across states.
  • Customers, insurers or regulators ask for written security evidence.
  • You have your own IT staff who need backup, tooling and escalation rather than replacement.
  • You are moving to Microsoft 365 enterprise plans or past 300 users 3.

Signs you are not: a single office of 60 people working business hours with no regulated data usually gets better value from standard managed IT services pricing tiers than from an enterprise contract.

How we handle these requests: requests from larger and multi-site organizations go to an advisory partner rather than a local provider, as described in how Clear IT Pricing works. An advisory partner can scope the work and compare delivery models before you talk to providers. Either way, our MSP selection questions apply.

Common questions

What are enterprise IT services?

Enterprise IT services are outsourced IT support, infrastructure, security and strategy delivered with 24/7 coverage, written service levels, change management and a named account team. Published 2026 provider guides put managed IT for organizations of about 50 to 500 employees at $100 to $400 per user per month 1. Larger firms often buy only parts of it and keep their own IT staff.

How much do enterprise IT services cost?

One MSP's 2026 guide puts managed IT for 100 to 500 employees at $10,000 to $50,000 a month at a basic level and $25,000 to $125,000 at premium 2. Another guide says a 100-person company should budget $15,000 to $35,000 a month 1. Each figure comes from one provider's own guide, so use them as a check on the quotes you receive.

What is the difference between enterprise IT and small business managed IT?

The tools are often the same; the difference is process and coverage. Enterprise agreements add 24/7 monitoring and support, measured service levels, formal change management, asset records and audit evidence. One 2026 guide prices true 24/7 support with guaranteed response at $25 to $50 per user per month on top of standard managed IT 2.

Do companies with in-house IT staff still need an MSP?

Often yes, for the parts a small team cannot cover, such as after-hours monitoring, security operations or project capacity. One provider's 2026 guide puts co-managed IT at $45 to $175 per user per month 6. Guides differ on the saving versus fully managed service: one says 20% to 30% less 2, another 30% to 50% less per user 1. The internal team keeps ownership of priorities and vendor decisions.

When do we need Microsoft 365 E3 instead of Business Premium?

Microsoft 365 Business plans support a maximum of 300 users, so organizations above that move to enterprise plans 3. Microsoft lists E3 at $39 and E5 at $60 per user per month paid yearly, against $22 for Business Premium 43. Some firms under 300 users choose E3 or E5 earlier for specific compliance or security features.

What should an enterprise IT contract include for multiple locations?

A multi-site contract should name a standard build for every site, who manages the network and carriers between locations, how on-site work is delivered at remote sites, and a recovery plan per location. It should also keep an inventory of devices and licenses by site. Ask providers how many locations they support for clients of similar size.

How much does an in-house enterprise IT team cost?

BLS median wages for May 2025 were $175,140 for an IT manager 9, $99,130 for a systems administrator 10 and $61,860 for a user support specialist 11. With benefits making up 30% of total employer compensation 12, a three-person team of those roles costs about $480,200 a year including benefits, based on BLS data (our calculation). It still lacks 24/7 coverage.
