The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH: $116,770) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are IT support and operations provided by an outside firm on a monthly contract, typically covering the help desk, monitoring, patching, security, backups and technology planning.
Managed IT services in Boston: costs and the hiring alternative
Hold Boston quotes against the published range of $100 to $250 per user per month; plans that bundle full security can cost $300 or more 16.
Boston IT salaries run well above the national median. The metro median in May 2025 was $116,770 for a network and computer systems administrator and $77,850 for a computer user support specialist 2, compared with national medians of $99,130 and $61,860 4. Benefits make up 30% of private employer compensation 3. Using that share, a Boston administrator costs about $166,800 a year by our calculation, and a help desk specialist about $111,200.
Even the help desk hire alone costs more than fully managed IT for a 25-person firm at the top of the published range ($75,000). See our managed IT pricing guide for what a fair scope includes.
Boston's health care, biotech and education economy
Suffolk County, which includes the city of Boston, had 22,034 business establishments in 2023, including 5,387 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,640 with 50 to 249 5. It also had 490 computer systems design and related services establishments 5. Many metro firms sit outside Suffolk in Middlesex and Norfolk counties, so these counts understate the regional market.
Across the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro, education and health services employed about 613,700 people in August 2026, professional and business services 502,000 and financial activities 176,500 (preliminary) 6. HUD notes that nine of the area's 10 largest employers are education or health care providers, including Mass General Brigham and Dana-Farber, and calls Boston the biotech hub of the world 9.
What that means for IT:
- Clinical practices and health tech vendors need HIPAA-aligned access control, encryption and risk analysis; see HIPAA compliance services and IT for health care.
- Biotech and life sciences startups protect research data and often grow from 10 to 100 people quickly, so they need IT that scales.
- Defense suppliers that handle controlled defense information, in a region where Raytheon/RTX employs 10,000+ 9, face DFARS and NIST SP 800-171 obligations; see the CMMC overview.

Get my Boston quoteMassachusetts rules: 201 CMR 17.00 and breach reporting
Massachusetts expects a written plan from almost every business. Regulation 201 CMR 17.00 requires every person that owns or licenses personal information about a Massachusetts resident to keep a written information security program, known as a WISP 8. The program must be developed, implemented and maintained, not just written once 8. That includes a five-person firm holding employee Social Security numbers.
The breach law (Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 93H) ties directly to the WISP. Businesses must notify affected residents, the Attorney General and the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation (OCABR) as soon as practicable and without unreasonable delay, with no minimum number of residents 7. The report to regulators must say whether you maintain a WISP. If Social Security numbers were exposed, you must offer 18 months of free credit monitoring 7.
Massachusetts has no comprehensive consumer privacy law in force as of October 2026; a bill passed both chambers in different versions, but a conference committee had not produced a final law 10. Our written information security plan guide explains what a WISP contains. Ask counsel to review yours.
Cybersecurity services in Boston
Boston cybersecurity services should do two jobs: run the controls and document them in your WISP. Massachusetts residents filed 22,936 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025 and reported $411 million in losses 11. Nationally, business email compromise, in which a fake or hijacked email redirects a payment, accounted for about $3.05 billion in reported losses 11.
A practical baseline covers MFA, monitored endpoint protection, email filtering, encryption of laptops and tested backups, with each control written into the WISP and reviewed. Health care and biotech firms usually add access reviews and logging.
If a board, investor or hospital client wants a named security lead, a part-time vCISO is the common answer. Published vCISO retainers run about $1,500 to $4,000 a month for organizations under 50 employees 12, well below a full-time security analyst's $129,180 national median salary 13. See vCISO services and our small business cybersecurity guide.
IT consulting and co-managed IT in Boston
Boston organizations with an internal IT manager often keep that person and add co-managed support. As a reference point, one provider publishes co-managed pricing of $45 to $175 per user per month 14, with the upper end including a security operations center layer. The provider typically handles monitoring, patching and security tooling, and your staff handle users, vendors and research or clinical systems. See co-managed IT.
One-time IT consulting is billed by the hour or the project; one 2026 guide puts external consultants at $150 to $250 an hour 15. Typical Boston projects include writing or updating a WISP, HIPAA risk analysis, lab or office build-outs, and Microsoft 365 security hardening. See IT consulting.
Choosing a Boston IT provider with on-site support
Ask Boston providers to show their WISP experience first, since every Massachusetts client needs one. Then check on-site reach; Boston-area offices and labs spread across several counties, and travel time is often billed. Ask:
- Will you help write and annually review our WISP, and is it included?
- Have you supported HIPAA practices, biotech labs or defense suppliers?
- Which of our locations get on-site visits, and how fast?
- Who owns our documentation and admin accounts if we leave?
If you also have offices in Providence, Albany or on Long Island, ask how visits to those offices are priced. Our MSP selection guide covers contract terms, and the managed IT services overview explains standard contracts. Through the form, your request reaches one local provider or advisory partner, who replies within one business day.
