Get a quote for 25 peoplePlan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Urban Honolulu, HI: $102,050) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Get my Honolulu quoteHawaii breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection must also be notified when a breach involves more than 1,000 residents. The full rule and statute link are in our Hawaii data breach notification law guide.
- Backup and disaster recovery (BDR)
- BDR, short for backup and disaster recovery, is the service of copying a company's data and systems to protected storage and keeping a tested plan to restore them and resume work after a hardware failure, ransomware attack or natural disaster.
Managed IT services in Honolulu: rates and the hiring math
That per-person band 12 is not the only pricing model on the island. Some providers bill by device: VC3's 2026 guide puts per-workstation pricing at $50 to $100 a month and per-server pricing at $100 to $400 13.
Local pay splits in two directions. In the Urban Honolulu metro, systems administrators earned a median $102,050 in May 2025, above the national median, while user support specialists earned $58,960, below the $61,860 national figure 51214. A help desk hire is relatively affordable, about $84,200 a year once benefits are included (our calculation) 9. Senior skills cost more, and one hire still leaves nobody covering when that person is sick, on leave or gone. Our article on how managed IT is priced explains what raises or lowers a quote.
Who does business in Honolulu: military, government, visitors and hospitals
The City and County of Honolulu, one consolidated government covering Oahu, had 20,890 business establishments in 2023 3. Of those, 4,815 had 10 to 49 employees and 1,047 had 50 to 249 3, and 292 were IT firms in the Census code for computer systems design and related services 4.
Government is the largest job sector, at 89,500 of 454,300 nonfarm jobs in August 2026, ahead of trade, transportation and utilities (79,700), leisure and hospitality (73,800) and education and health services (69,900) (preliminary) 6. The military explains much of that. HUD's 2021 market analysis lists Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (23,400), Schofield Barracks (17,600), Marine Corps Base Hawaii (9,400) and Fort Shafter (6,700) as Honolulu's largest employers 7. The same analysis describes the Department of the Navy as the largest contracting entity in Hawaii, with more than $9 billion in defense contracts 7. U.S. Indo-Pacific Command has its headquarters at Camp H.M. Smith, just outside Honolulu 8.
Visitors and health care round out the picture. In the same HUD analysis, Oahu typically receives about 60% of all visitors to Hawaii, and The Queen's Health Systems (7,475) and Hawaii Pacific Health (7,275) are the largest private employers 7. Hotels and tour operators need payment security and reliable guest networks; clinics and their vendors need HIPAA-aligned IT; contractors need the federal controls covered below.

Get my Honolulu quoteHawaii breach, insurance and privacy rules
Hawaii puts no day count on breach notice; affected residents are told without unreasonable delay 11. Points to note for Honolulu businesses:
- A harm test. Not every incident qualifies: illegal use of the information has to have occurred or be reasonably likely, and it must create a risk of harm to a person 15.
- Paper counts. The law reaches personal information in any form, including paper records 11.
- A state office, not the Attorney General. Letters to more than 1,000 people at one time mean a written report, without unreasonable delay, to the Office of Consumer Protection, plus notice to the nationwide consumer reporting agencies 11.
Violations can cost up to $2,500 each, and injured people can recover actual damages 16. Insurers, agencies and other insurance licensees have a tighter rule. Hawaii's Insurance Data Security Law requires a written information security program and notice to the Insurance Commissioner no later than three business days after a qualifying cybersecurity event 17. A licensee with fewer than 10 employees is excused from keeping the program 17.
As of October 2026, Hawaii has not enacted a general consumer privacy statute of the kind California has 18. Hawaii residents filed 3,328 IC3 complaints in 2025 reporting about $106 million in losses 19. See our Hawaii breach notification page for the full rule.
Backup, recovery and cybersecurity services in Honolulu
On Oahu, the recovery plan deserves as much attention as the security tools. Replacement hardware may have to come from the mainland, so a failed server or a ransomware attack can keep an office down longer than the same event would in a mainland city. To shorten that downtime:
- Back up critical data to cloud storage outside Hawaii as well as locally, and test restores on a schedule.
- Keep spare laptops and a spare firewall on island.
- Decide in advance who makes recovery decisions and the order in which systems come back.
For firms of 20 to 50 people, a 2026 provider guide lists managed backup between $300 and $1,200 monthly; a fully managed disaster recovery service with defined recovery targets is $1,000 to $3,000 10. In Sophos's 2026 ransomware survey of mid-sized organizations (100 to 5,000 employees), 55% were fully recovered within a week 20, and tested backups are what make a week possible. Options are compared on our BDR services page.
Defense contractors carry extra duties. Covered defense information must sit on systems meeting NIST SP 800-171, and incidents go to DoD within 72 hours of discovery, under DFARS 252.204-7012 21. DoD's July 13, 2026 suspension of Phase 2 leaves CMMC stuck in Phase 1, with self-assessments still in force 22, and the dates could move again. Our CMMC status page tracks it.
Splitting IT between Honolulu staff and a mainland provider
Oahu organizations that employ an administrator often keep them and contract out the monitoring, the security tools and the overnight shift. A mainland provider can supply the overnight monitoring while a local person handles hands-on work, a split that suits the time difference. For that shared model, Meriplex's 2026 budget article quotes $45 to $175 per head monthly 23. Contract terms are covered on our co-managed IT page.
Project work such as a hurricane-season recovery test, a cloud migration or a NIST SP 800-171 gap review is usually quoted separately from the monthly plan.
Choosing a Honolulu IT services provider with technicians on Oahu
Choose a provider that can put a person in your office, not only a voice on the phone. Ask:
- Are your technicians on Oahu, and what does an on-site visit cost?
- If your help desk sits on the mainland, which hours does it cover in Hawaii time?
- Where are our backups stored, and when did you last run a full restore for a client?
- Have you supported federal contractors or HIPAA practices?
If you are weighing a provider based in San Francisco, Oakland or San Jose for specialist work, pair it with on-island support and put the split in writing. A longer checklist is in picking the right MSP, and the national managed IT services index covers other markets.
