The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Reno, NV: $95,600) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Managed IT services in Reno: plans, pay and shift coverage
Reno quotes follow that national per-worker band 12. Plant and warehouse sites often add per-device or per-site charges for firewalls, switches and wireless; one security vendor's 2026 guide puts managed firewall service at $50 to $300 a month 10.
Local pay runs a little under national levels. The Reno metro median was $95,600 for a systems administrator and $55,330 for a user support specialist in May 2025 56, against national medians of $99,130 and $61,860 1112. With benefits at 30% of compensation 9, an administrator still costs about $136,600 a year (our calculation), about 1.8 times what 25 users would pay for a managed plan at $250 each.
The harder cost to price is coverage. A plant that runs nights or weekends needs someone who answers then, and one in-house hire cannot do that alone. Overnight and weekend coverage is one of the line items to compare in our managed IT pricing guide.
Reno's business base: batteries, data centers and distribution
Washoe County had 14,199 business establishments in 2023, with 3,298 employing 10 to 49 people and 652 employing 50 to 249 3. Census put 224 of them in computer systems design and related services 4, where support providers sit alongside software and consulting firms.
Industry sets Reno apart. HUD reports that Tesla is the area's largest employer and that its Gigafactory 1 has contributed more than $20 billion in economic output to Nevada since 2014 8. The same report says Tesla plans a $3.6 billion investment adding 3,000 jobs at two new battery factories near Sparks 8. The 107,000-acre Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center hosts more than 100 companies, among them logistics and fulfillment operations and many data centers, drawn by lower land and power costs and nearby fiber routes 8. Apple and Google also operate in the area 8.
In August 2026 the metro counted 61,300 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 41,500 in leisure and hospitality and 32,000 in manufacturing, out of 284,900 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 7. The University of Nevada, Reno (8,050 employees) and Renown Health (6,500) anchor education and health care 8.
Suppliers, contractors and logistics firms here usually need the same things from IT: plant or warehouse equipment kept on its own network, help with customer security reviews, and support for shifts that do not keep office hours. Our manufacturing IT guide covers the plant side.

Get my Reno quoteNevada breach, security and health data laws
Nevada's notice rule sets no day count. Its standard for data collectors is the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 13. State agencies, the Attorney General included, get no filing; the nationwide consumer reporting agencies do, once more than 1,000 people are notified at one time 13. A violation counts as a deceptive trade practice 13.
Nevada also writes security duties into the same chapter. Every data collector has to maintain reasonable security for personal information. Card-accepting businesses are bound to the payment card industry standard, PCI DSS, and businesses outside that group must encrypt personal information whenever they transmit it beyond their own secure system 13. For a manufacturer that emails employee or customer records to a payroll firm, benefits broker or client, that encryption rule is the one to check.
There is no comprehensive consumer privacy law in Nevada as of October 2026 14. A narrower statute on consumer health data, SB 370, took effect March 31, 2024 and governs businesses that collect, share or sell Nevada consumers' health data 15, which can reach wellness, fitness and health app businesses. Nevada residents filed 13,366 IC3 complaints in 2025, reporting about $302 million in losses 16. The Nevada breach notification page has the full rule.
Cybersecurity services for Reno plants, warehouses and offices
Industrial sites get breached through the edge of the network more than through the inbox. Exploited vulnerabilities opened 31% of breaches in Verizon's 2026 DBIR, more than any other route, and 48% involved a third party 17. Equipment vendors that dial in to service a line, and integrators that left a remote session open, both count.
Work through these in order at a Reno plant or warehouse:
- Separate production and warehouse equipment from office systems, with a firewall between them.
- List every vendor with remote access, require MFA, and switch access off when the job ends.
- Patch internet-facing systems first, then servers, then workstations.
- Run endpoint detection and response on office machines and any Windows PCs on the floor.
- Back up configurations for controllers and network gear, not only files.
Cyber insurers ask about much of this too; Marsh's list of key controls includes MFA for remote and privileged access, endpoint detection and response, patch and vulnerability management, tested backups, and protecting or replacing end-of-life systems 18. See cyber insurance requirements for what applications ask.
Co-managed IT for Reno plants with their own technician
Co-managed IT lets a Reno plant keep its controls engineer or IT technician in charge of the floor while the provider handles monitoring, patching, endpoint security and after-hours alerts. Larger plants often employ someone like that, and their knowledge of the equipment is hard to replace. Co-managed work costs $45 to $175 a worker each month in Meriplex's 2026 article, depending on the security included 19. Our co-managed IT page explains how to split duties in writing.
Project work in this market tends to be network design for a new building, a segmentation project between plant and office, or a data center move. Cloudiway's 2026 guide puts outside consultants at $150 to $250 hourly 20.
Choosing a managed service provider in Reno for plant and office
Test each candidate on the plant as well as the office:
- Have you supported production or warehouse networks, and who on your team has done it?
- How do you manage vendor remote access to equipment you do not own?
- Who responds to a 2 a.m. alert, and what does an on-site visit in Washoe County or Storey County cost?
- What do we receive, and when, if we end the contract?
Reno firms with California offices in Sacramento, Oakland or San Francisco should check whether one provider can cover both states and both breach laws. More questions are in how to evaluate an MSP, and other cities link from the managed IT services hub.
Common questions
What do managed IT services in Reno cost?
How much does IT support cost in Reno if I hire someone?
Can a managed service provider in Reno cover plant equipment?
Yes, if the contract says so. A provider runs office IT for a monthly fee and can also monitor and secure the network that plant equipment sits on. Make sure the contract states which devices are covered, since many plans include only office computers and servers.
Does Nevada law require businesses to protect personal information?
Yes. Nevada requires reasonable security measures, PCI DSS compliance for businesses that accept payment cards, and encryption of personal information sent outside a business's secure system 13. Confirm your obligations with counsel.
