The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Boise City, ID: $94,140) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - A virtual CIO (vCIO) is a technology leader you share rather than hire, usually supplied by an IT provider or consultant, who sets a company's IT roadmap, budget and vendor choices for a fraction of what a full-time executive would cost.
Boise's economy: state government, hospitals and chips
State government, two hospital systems and a chipmaker are the Boise metro's largest employers. HUD lists the State of Idaho (13,350 employees) first, followed by St. Luke's Health System (6,000 to 6,999) and Micron Technology (5,000 to 5,999), with Saint Alphonsus Health System fourth 10.
Micron's growth is the long-range story. Under preliminary CHIPS Act terms announced in April 2024, Micron planned a $25 billion leading-edge memory fab in Idaho next to its Boise R&D facilities, with about 600,000 square feet of cleanroom 11. The project was expected to bring more than 2,000 manufacturing and facility jobs plus 4,500 construction jobs over two decades 11. Contractors, toolmakers, staffing firms and logistics companies that work on that project will face supplier security reviews.
In August 2026 the metro had 67,800 education and health services jobs, 62,800 professional and business services jobs, 51,400 government jobs and 31,400 manufacturing jobs out of 421,900 (preliminary) 9. Ada County counted 17,028 establishments in 2023, with 3,751 employing 10 to 49 people and 735 employing 50 to 249 7. Ada County's 296 IT businesses in the computer systems design and related services code 8 include software developers as well as support shops. Our manufacturing IT guide covers plant and supplier networks.

Get my Boise quoteIdaho's breach law and why contracts matter more
Idaho's breach statute sets no day count. The first duty is a prompt, good-faith investigation; where it shows misuse of residents' information has occurred or is reasonably likely, notice follows as soon as possible and without unreasonable delay 12. Private businesses do not have to notify the Attorney General or any other state office; only public agencies do 12. A business that intentionally fails to give notice faces a fine of up to $25,000 per breach 13.
By October 2026 Idaho still had no comprehensive consumer privacy statute 14, and our research turned up no Idaho statute that sets general security standards for private companies. That leaves three other sources of rules for a typical Boise company:
- Other states. Customers who live in Washington, Oregon or Utah bring those states' deadlines with them.
- Federal sector rules. St. Luke's and Saint Alphonsus affiliates and vendors follow HIPAA; lenders and tax preparers follow the FTC Safeguards Rule.
- Contracts and insurance. A prime contractor's supplier terms or a cyber policy can be stricter than any Idaho statute.
FBI IC3 received 4,479 Idaho complaints in 2025 with about $88.7 million in reported losses 15. Our Idaho breach notification page has the statute detail. Ask counsel which rules reach your customer list.
Cybersecurity services Boise insurers expect
For a Boise small business, the cyber insurance application is often the most demanding security document it signs. Marsh names twelve minimum controls insurers now look for; among them are MFA on remote and privileged access, EDR, backups that are encrypted and tested, patch management, incident response plans and phishing training 16.
The answers have to be accurate. In a 2022 federal lawsuit, Travelers asked a court to void a $1 million cyber policy after a ransomware attack, alleging the insured had said it used MFA on its servers when MFA only protected its firewall 18. A provider should document each control so your answers can be backed up.

IT consulting, vCIO and co-managed options in Boise
Fast-growing Boise firms often need planning more than extra hands. A virtual CIO can set the three-year roadmap, plan an office move or prepare for a large customer's audit. Expect $200 to $300 hourly, or a $2,000 to $10,000 monthly retainer, in published rates; some providers fold the role into managed plans 19. Our virtual CIO page explains when the role pays off.
If you already have a technician, split the work through co-managed IT. Meriplex's 2026 range for that is $45 to $175 per employee monthly, rising with the monitoring and security added 20.
Testing a Boise IT company before you sign
Paperwork matters as much as support when you test a Boise provider. Ask:
- Can you fill in our cyber insurance application with us and keep evidence for every control?
- Have you helped a client pass a manufacturer's supplier security review?
- Will a technician come to every Treasure Valley site we run, and at what rate?
- How are admin accounts, documentation and backups returned if we leave?
Contract terms are covered in our MSP evaluation checklist. For regional offices, compare Spokane, Salt Lake City and Reno, or browse all markets from the managed IT services home.
