Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX: $96,770) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). Managed IT services pricing in San Antonio

Per-device pricing is also common, and in Kaseya's 2023 survey more MSPs charged $50 to $100 per device per month than any other band 8.

Local salaries are close to the national level. San Antonio systems administrators earned a median $96,770 in May 2025, and help desk specialists $57,400, compared with national medians of $99,130 and $61,860 36910. Once benefits are added, one sysadmin costs about $138,200 a year by our calculation from BLS data 7.

A military town with a cybersecurity cluster

The military shapes much of San Antonio's IT demand. Joint Base San Antonio, which spans Lackland, Fort Sam Houston and Randolph, had 74,713 direct employees in 2025, including 33,256 active-duty military personnel 5. It contributed at least $53 billion to the Texas economy 5. HUD counts 82,600 military and civilian workers there using a different method 11.

Port San Antonio, the former Kelly Air Force Base, had nearly 18,000 people working on its campus in 2024, concentrated in aerospace and cybersecurity 12. Government accounted for 181,800 metro jobs in August 2026 (preliminary) 13.

The civilian side matters too. USAA (19,000) and health systems including Methodist Healthcare (12,000), UT Health San Antonio (7,930) and Baptist Health System (6,490) are top employers 11. In August 2026 (preliminary), education and health services employed 180,300 people in the metro, professional and business services 162,400 and financial activities 101,900 13. Clinics, labs and billing firms that work with those health systems need HIPAA compliance services.

Bexar County had 39,726 establishments in 2023, including 9,662 with 10 to 49 staff and 2,389 with 50 to 249, and 597 computer systems design and related services establishments 4.

CMMC and defense work: what applies today

San Antonio contractors serving JBSA or other DoD customers must still protect contract data even though CMMC certification is paused. On July 13, 2026 DoD paused CMMC in Phase 1; Phase 2 third-party assessments have no new start date 14.

What still applies: annual Level 1 self-assessments for firms handling Federal Contract Information, Level 2 self-assessments where contracts call for them, DFARS 252.204-7012, and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 enforcement 1415. The schedule could change again.

Incident reporting has no pause. If a subcontractor serving JBSA finds ransomware on a system that holds covered defense information, DFARS 252.204-7012 requires a report to DoD within 72 hours of discovery 23. Images of the affected systems must then be kept for at least 90 days after the report 23, so plan where that evidence will be stored before you need it.

Firms that handle controlled data often weigh Microsoft's government cloud. See our guides to CMMC, CMMC Level 1 and GCC High.

Texas law: breach notice, privacy and a safe harbor

After determining that a breach occurred, a Texas business has no more than 60 days to notify affected individuals, and a breach touching 250 or more Texans must also be reported to the Attorney General within 30 days 16. The same law requires reasonable procedures to protect sensitive personal information 16.

The Attorney General deadline arrives first. Say a San Antonio clinic or retailer determines on June 1 that 300 Texans' records were exposed. It must file with the Attorney General no later than July 1, while the outer limit for notifying those 300 people is July 31 16.

The Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, in force since July 1, 2024, has no consumer-count threshold but excludes businesses that are small under the SBA definition, except that they still need consent to sell sensitive data 17.

Two other laws are worth knowing:

  • Safe harbor. A Texas business with fewer than 250 employees cannot be ordered to pay punitive damages after a breach if it maintained a qualifying cybersecurity program at the time. A program that conforms to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework is one example, and the rule took effect September 1, 2025 18.

  • Biometrics. Capturing fingerprints or face scans for a commercial purpose requires notice and consent, with penalties up to $25,000 per violation 19. If you use fingerprint time clocks, ask counsel whether the rule applies.

Texans filed 97,912 FBI IC3 complaints in 2025, second among states, and reported about $1.83 billion in losses 20.

Cybersecurity services in San Antonio

Because Texas now rewards documented security programs, San Antonio firms get more from a written, framework-based program than from scattered tools. Ask a provider to map its services to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and give you the documentation.

Core controls to fund first: MFA everywhere, which Microsoft research found cut account compromise risk by 99.22% 21; endpoint detection and response; patching; and backups tested by restoring. Our cybersecurity for small business guide and risk assessment page show where to begin.

IT consulting, co-managed IT and choosing a provider

Firms that already have an internal IT person often fit co-managed IT: that person handles users while the provider supplies tools, monitoring and depth. A single provider's 2026 guide prices co-managed plans at $45 to $175 per user monthly 22. Our pages on co-managed IT and IT consulting compare the models.

Questions to ask a San Antonio provider: Have you supported a NIST 800-171 self-assessment? Is on-site work included, and how far do you travel? Will you document our program for the Texas safe harbor? Our guide to choosing an MSP has more. Compare with Austin, Houston and Fort Worth, or open the managed IT services directory.

Common questions

How much do managed IT services cost in San Antonio?

Published 2026 provider guides put managed IT at $100 to $250 per user per month 12. That puts a 25-person San Antonio office at roughly $2,500 to $6,250 a month, and compliance-heavy defense work can push it higher.

How fast must a San Antonio business report a data breach?

Affected people must be notified within 60 days of determining that a breach occurred, and the Attorney General within 30 days when 250 or more Texans are involved 16. Confirm specifics with counsel.

Does the Texas cybersecurity safe harbor apply to my business?

It can if you have fewer than 250 employees and maintained a qualifying cybersecurity program at the time of a breach 18. The protection is from punitive damages, not from all liability. Ask counsel whether your program meets the statute.

Do San Antonio defense contractors need CMMC certification now?

Third-party CMMC certification is paused while DoD reviews the program, but self-assessments, DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 obligations remain 1415. Check your contracts, because requirements may change.

Is an IT company in San Antonio better than a remote-only provider?

It depends on what sits in your office. A remote provider can fix most problems, but servers, secure enclaves and network gear sometimes need hands on site. Ask whether visits are included or billed per trip.

Is it cheaper to hire an IT person in San Antonio?

Usually not for firms under about 50 people. One sysadmin costs about $138,200 a year with benefits by our calculation from BLS data 37, more than managed IT for 25 users at $30,000 to $75,000 a year 12.
