The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX: $103,260) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- vCISO
- Short for virtual chief information security officer, a vCISO is a fractional security executive under contract who sets security priorities, keeps the written program current and signs off on answers to auditors and clients, at a fraction of a full-time salary.
Managed IT services in Plano: costs and the security gap
At that per-employee rate 12, a 25-person Plano office spends $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Skip the contract and pay per visit instead, and published hourly rates run $75 to $250 1.
BLS publishes no Plano-only wage series, so we use the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro figures, the same ones on our Dallas page. As of May 2025, the median salary was $103,260 for a systems administrator and $60,710 for a user support specialist 34. Benefits account for 30% of private-sector compensation costs 5; grossing the salary up by that share puts one administrator near $147,500 a year in our estimate.
Security leadership is often the first gap a growing Plano company feels. The retainer figures in the table 6 buy a part-time vCISO for much less than a full-time security salary. Tier-by-tier scope is spelled out in what managed IT services cost.
IT services for Plano's banks, insurers and their suppliers
Financial services are a large share of Plano's private employment. Plano Economic Development figures published in December 2025 put JPMorgan Chase at 11,261 local employees, Bank of America at 6,566 and Capital One Finance at 5,649 7. Liberty Mutual, USAA, Fannie Mae and Fisher Investments employ 1,700 to 2,100 people each 7. The city's technology base goes back to EDS and Perot Systems, and Texas Instruments anchors an electronics cluster 8.
Most Plano small businesses are not banks, but many sell to them. A staffing agency, marketing shop, software vendor or consultant that wins work from one of those employers will usually face a vendor security review before the first invoice. Expect questions about MFA, encryption, backups, incident response and who at your company owns security. A provider that keeps written evidence turns that review into an afternoon's work.
Of Collin County's 31,012 business establishments in 2023, 6,279 employed 10 to 49 people and 1,427 employed 50 to 249 9. A striking 2,418 were IT firms, counted by Census under computer systems design and related services 9, more than Dallas County's 2,293 10 even though Dallas County has more than twice as many businesses. That Census category includes software developers and consultancies, so it is not a count of MSPs.

Get my Plano quoteLenders, brokers and tax preparers: the FTC Safeguards Rule
Mortgage brokers, mortgage lenders, finance companies and tax preparers in Plano answer to the FTC Safeguards Rule, which covers financial institutions that no other federal regulator oversees 1112. Its requirements are specific:
- A named Qualified Individual must oversee the information security program, and that person can be an employee or a service provider 12.
- Encryption of customer information in transit and at rest, and MFA for anyone accessing an information system, unless the Qualified Individual approves equivalent controls 12.
- A written risk assessment and a written incident response plan, though a firm holding data on fewer than 5,000 consumers is excused from those two items and two others 12.
- An FTC report within 30 days of discovery when unencrypted data on 500 or more consumers is acquired without authorization 12.
For a small lender or tax office, a vCISO or the security lead at an MSP often fills the Qualified Individual role. See our financial services IT guide and the vCISO services page.
Texas breach and privacy rules for Plano companies
Once a Plano business determines a breach occurred, Texas allows 60 days to notify the people affected 13. At 250 or more Texas residents, an electronic report goes to the Attorney General within 30 days of that determination 1314, and when more than 10,000 people are notified, the consumer reporting agencies must be told as well 13.
Penalties are written into the statute. The Attorney General can seek $2,000 to $50,000 per violation, plus up to $100 per affected person for each day notice is late, capped at $250,000 for a single breach 15. A Plano mortgage broker that exposes unencrypted files on 600 Texas clients would be working against two 30-day clocks at once, one for the Texas Attorney General and one for the FTC 1213.
Texas's broad privacy statute (the TDPSA, effective July 1, 2024) reaches businesses that are not small under SBA size standards; SBA-small firms must still get consumer consent to sell sensitive data 16. Under SB 2610, effective September 1, 2025, a Texas company with under 250 employees whose security program met the statute when a breach happened is shielded from exemplary damages 17. Following the NIST Cybersecurity Framework is one accepted model 17. Texas logged 97,912 FBI IC3 complaints and $1.83 billion in losses in 2025, behind only California 18. The Texas data breach statute page covers it in full.
Cybersecurity services Plano firms should buy first
The best first security purchases for a Plano firm are the controls a bank's vendor questionnaire will ask about. MFA lowered account compromise risk by 99.22% in Microsoft's research 19. Business email compromise, meanwhile, accounted for about $3.05 billion in 2025 losses reported to the FBI 18.
In order of priority:
- MFA on mailboxes, VPN or remote desktop, and all administrator logins
- MDR on every laptop and server, commonly $8 to $25 a device monthly 20
- Encrypted backups, with a test restore every quarter
- A written security program and incident response plan you can hand to a client
Our security checklist for small firms explains each one.
Choosing a Plano IT provider that can handle vendor reviews
Choose a Plano provider that will complete client security questionnaires and can act as, or support, your Safeguards Rule Qualified Individual. If you already have an IT employee, co-managed IT can fill the gaps without a second hire; Meriplex puts it at $45 to $175 per employee monthly for 2026 21.
When you compare providers, ask:
- Will you complete client security questionnaires, and is that in the monthly fee?
- Can you serve as our Safeguards Rule Qualified Individual, or support the person who does?
- How fast can a technician reach our office, and is on-site time billed separately?
- On termination, what data and passwords come back to us, and how fast?
Exit clauses and other contract terms get a closer look in our MSP buyer's guide. If you also have an office in Dallas, Irving or Fort Worth, those pages cover the same metro, and the national managed IT services page covers everywhere else.
Common questions
What do managed IT services cost in Plano?
What does pay-per-call IT support cost in Plano?
Pay-per-call IT help in 2026 pricing guides costs $75 to $250 per hour, and urgent calls can top $300 1. Firms with steady ticket volume usually prefer a flat monthly plan because the cost is predictable.
Does the FTC Safeguards Rule apply to my Plano business?
It applies if you are a non-bank financial institution under FTC jurisdiction, such as a mortgage broker, finance company or tax preparer 1112. Covered firms need a Qualified Individual, MFA and encryption, and must tell the FTC within 30 days when a breach involves 500 or more consumers 12. Confirm your status with counsel.
What IT services in Plano help pass a bank's vendor review?
Reviewers look for multifactor sign-in on every account, EDR on devices, backups that are encrypted and test-restored, and a written security program that includes incident response. A provider that documents those controls can supply the evidence reviewers ask for.
How long does a Plano business have to report a data breach?
Are Dallas-Fort Worth wage figures accurate for Plano?
They are metro-wide figures, because BLS does not publish a separate Plano series. The May 2025 DFW median was $103,260 for a systems administrator 3, and actual Plano offers may differ by role and employer.
