IT infrastructure services
IT infrastructure services are the ongoing management, maintenance and project work that keep an organization's servers, storage, networks, firewalls and cloud platforms available, secure, backed up and sized for current use.

What IT infrastructure services cover

IT infrastructure services cover the systems everything else runs on: servers, storage, the network, the firewall and the cloud platforms that have replaced some of them. User-facing help desk work sits on top of that layer and is usually priced per user; infrastructure is usually priced per device or quoted as a project.

The main pieces:

  • Servers. Physical or virtual machines that run file shares, line-of-business applications, databases and domain services.
  • Storage and backup. Disk arrays, NAS units, cloud storage and the backups that protect them. See backup and disaster recovery.
  • Network. Switches, Wi-Fi access points, internet circuits and the cabling that connects offices.
  • Perimeter. The firewall, VPN or remote access gateway, often run as a managed firewall service.
  • Cloud platforms. Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS or Google Cloud tenants that hold workloads which used to live on a server in the closet.

Most businesses with 5 to 250 staff buy this as part of managed IT services rather than from a separate infrastructure firm. Larger or multi-site environments sometimes split it out, with an in-house team handling users and a provider handling the data center and network.

Server management services: what's included and what it costs

Server management services keep each server monitored, patched, backed up and secured for a flat monthly fee per server. Three MSPs' published 2026 guides give these ranges:

  • $200 to $500 per server per month 3.
  • $100 to $500 per server, alongside $50 to $175 per workstation, in a guide that does not state the billing period 2.
  • $100 to $400 per server, in a guide that does not state the billing period 1.

No survey backs these; each is one provider's own price list, so use them to test the quotes you get. The spread reflects what is bundled. A low fee may mean monitoring and alerting only; a high one usually adds patching windows, backup verification, endpoint protection, capacity reporting and hands-on fixes.

Ask what a per-server fee includes:

  1. 24/7 monitoring of uptime, disk, memory and services, and who responds to alerts after hours.
  2. Operating system and application patching on a schedule, with a tested rollback.
  3. Daily backup checks and periodic test restores.
  4. Endpoint detection and response on every server.
  5. Hardware warranty coordination when a disk or power supply fails.
  6. A monthly report showing patch status, alerts and capacity trends.

The in-house comparison: the median wage for network and computer systems administrators was $99,130 in May 2025 9. With benefits at 30% of total employer compensation 10, one administrator costs about $141,600 a year including benefits, based on BLS data (our calculation), before tools, training or cover for vacations. A co-managed IT arrangement lets an existing IT person keep the servers while a provider adds after-hours monitoring.

Server maintenance: hardware, licenses and end of support

Server maintenance services cover the hardware and software lifecycle under the monthly management: warranties, firmware, operating system licenses and replacement before support ends. Monthly management does not usually pay for new hardware or licenses.

Hardware. A small business tower server is a modest purchase next to the management fee. Dell lists its PowerEdge T160 from $4,259, a configuration that comes with a 12-month basic next-business-day warranty; ProSupport is an extra-cost option 8. Buy the warranty term you plan to keep the server for; parts and on-site repair after warranty are slow and expensive to arrange.

Licenses. Microsoft lists Windows Server 2025 Standard at $1,176 and Datacenter at $6,771 for 16 cores, and requires client access licenses for every user or device that connects 6. For servers connected through Azure Arc, Microsoft also offers pay-as-you-go licensing at $33.58 per CPU core per month 6.

End of support. Extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends on January 12, 2027 7. After that, Microsoft stops releasing security updates, which matters for cyber insurance applications and compliance reviews. If you still run 2016, budget now for one of three paths: upgrade in place, replace the hardware, or move the workload to the cloud. Each is a project, not part of the monthly fee.

Network infrastructure: firewalls, switches and Wi-Fi

Network management is usually billed per device on top of server and user fees, and the published ranges differ by provider:

  • Firewalls. Managed firewall service pricing typically runs $50 to $300 per month, and entry-level appliances start around $1,000, with security subscription renewals adding $100 to $1,000 a year 4. One MSP guide lists firewalls at $100 to $250 a month 3; another lists $30 to $100 per firewall without stating the billing period 2.
  • Switches and other network devices. One guide lists network devices at $25 to $75 a month 3; another lists $15 to $75 per network switch, again without a billing period 2.
  • Wi-Fi. Access points are usually managed per device in the same way, with a cloud management license from the hardware maker on top.

Physical work is different. New cabling, rack builds and office fit-outs are quoted as projects; see structured cabling services. Multi-site networks add internet circuits, site-to-site VPN or SD-WAN, and the question of who calls the carrier when a line goes down, which belongs in the contract.

Cloud vs on-premises infrastructure

Cloud vs on-premises infrastructure is a cost and control decision, and many small businesses settle on a hybrid: Microsoft 365 for email and files, one or two local servers for applications that need them, and cloud backup.

Keep a local server when an application vendor requires it, when large files must open fast on the office network, or when internet outages would stop work. Move a workload to the cloud when the server is due for replacement anyway, staff work from several locations, or nobody wants to own the hardware.

Cloud costs are billed by use, which makes them easy to start and easy to overspend. A few reference prices:

  • AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery lists $0.028 per hour per replicating source server, about $20 a month at 730 hours by our arithmetic, before storage and recovery compute 11.
  • Managed cloud or offsite backup for a server runs $25 to $75 per server per month in one provider's guide 5.

A server replacement year is the natural time to decide. Our cloud migration services page covers the move itself, and an IT consulting engagement can model both options before you commit.

What an MSP covers vs what is billed as a project

A managed IT agreement covers keeping existing infrastructure running; changing it is usually a separate project with its own quote. Getting this line clear before signing avoids most billing disputes.

Usually inside the monthly fee:

  • Monitoring, alert response and routine fixes on covered devices.
  • Patching, backup checks and endpoint protection.
  • Small configuration changes, such as a new firewall rule or a user's file share access.

Usually billed as a project:

  • Server or storage replacement and data migration.
  • Network redesign, new sites, cabling and office moves.
  • Cloud migrations and major version upgrades, such as leaving Windows Server 2016.

Project labor is billed hourly or as a fixed bid. A 2026 migration guide lists external IT consultants at $150 to $250 per hour 12; one MSP's 2026 guide puts project work at $75 to $200 per hour depending on engineer seniority 2. For bigger jobs, ask for a fixed price with a written scope and a named project lead; see IT project management services.

Compare the monthly side against our managed IT services pricing guide. To test how a provider handles projects before you sign, see how to choose an MSP.

Common questions

What are IT infrastructure services?

IT infrastructure services are the management, maintenance and project work that keep servers, storage, networks, firewalls and cloud platforms running and secure. Most small and midsize businesses buy them inside a managed IT agreement priced per device, with one MSP's published 2026 guide putting server management at $200 to $500 per server per month 3. Larger changes, such as replacing a server, are quoted separately as projects.

How much do server management services cost?

One MSP's published 2026 guide puts server management at $200 to $500 per server per month 3; two other guides list $100 to $500 2 and $100 to $400 1 per server without stating the billing period. The low end often means monitoring only; the high end adds patching, backup checks, endpoint protection and hands-on fixes. Ask each provider to list exactly what the per-server fee includes.

What is included in server maintenance services?

Server maintenance services cover patching, firmware updates, warranty coordination, license renewals and replacement planning before vendor support ends. Hardware and licenses are usually extra: Dell lists a PowerEdge T160 tower server from $4,259 with a 12-month basic warranty 8, and Microsoft lists Windows Server 2025 Standard at $1,176 for 16 cores 6. The monthly management fee pays for the work, not the equipment.

Does managed IT include infrastructure projects?

Usually not. Managed IT covers running and fixing what you already have, while server replacements, migrations, network redesigns and office moves are quoted as projects. One 2026 guide lists external IT consultants at $150 to $250 per hour for this kind of work 12. Ask for a fixed-price quote with a written scope for anything large.

What happens when Windows Server 2016 support ends?

Extended support for Windows Server 2016 ends on January 12, 2027, after which Microsoft stops releasing security updates for it 7. Servers still running it become a finding in insurance and compliance reviews. Plan an upgrade, a hardware replacement or a move to the cloud before that date, and budget it as a project.

Should a small business keep an on-premises server or move to the cloud?

Keep a local server when an application requires it or large files must open fast in the office; move to the cloud when the hardware is due for replacement or staff work from several places. Cloud services are billed by use: AWS lists disaster recovery replication at $0.028 per server per hour, about $20 a month by our arithmetic before storage and compute 11. Many small businesses end up hybrid.

How much does network infrastructure management cost?

Published ranges differ by provider: managed firewall service typically runs $50 to $300 a month 4, and one MSP guide lists network devices at $25 to $75 and firewalls at $100 to $250 a month 3. Another lists $15 to $75 per switch and $30 to $100 per firewall without stating the billing period 2. Firewall appliances and their security subscriptions are bought separately.
