Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Spokane-Spokane Valley, WA: $94,670) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Washington breach notice rule: notify affected residents within 30 days. The Attorney General must also be notified when a breach involves more than 500 residents. The full rule and statute link are in our Washington data breach notification law guide.

Remote monitoring and management (RMM)
Remote monitoring and management is the software an IT provider installs on a client's computers and servers to watch their health, push updates and fix many problems without a site visit, and it is the backbone of most managed IT contracts.

Spokane managed IT services costs, and why hiring costs more

Within that per-employee band 12, basic remote support sits near the bottom; plans with managed detection and strategy time sit near the top. Hourly break-fix work is listed at $75 to $250 1.

Spokane's wage picture tilts the decision toward outsourcing. The local median for a computer user support specialist was $63,460 in May 2025, above the national $61,860 46. Systems administrators earned $94,670 3. Benefits add 30% of compensation 5, so our estimate for one help desk hire is about $90,700 a year, which tops even premium managed pricing for 25 people.

For an office of 15 to 40 people, that makes the first internal hire hard to justify on cost alone. Before comparing bids, line each up against the scope list in our managed IT pricing explainer.

Spokane's business base: a tanker base and a regional health hub

Spokane's largest employer is an Air Force base, and HUD describes the city as a regional health care hub. Fairchild Air Force Base has 7,400 personnel including military, ahead of Providence Health & Services (6,775), the State of Washington (5,950), Amazon (3,725), MultiCare Health System (3,350) and the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center (1,600) 10. Health care and social assistance makes up 86% of local education and health services jobs 10.

Fairchild, about 12 miles west of the city, is described by the Air Force as its premier tanker base. It hosts the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, the Washington Air National Guard's 141st Air Refueling Wing and the Air Force survival training school 11.

In August 2026 the metro had 58,500 education and health services jobs, its largest supersector, plus 40,800 in government and 28,000 in professional and business services, out of 264,400 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 9. Of Spokane County's 14,426 establishments in 2023, 3,442 had 10 to 49 employees and 664 had 50 to 249 7.

The local IT supply is small. Census coded 170 county businesses as computer systems design and related services, with none, or too few to publish, in any size class above 50 employees 8. Most local providers are small shops, so ask how deep each one's bench is.

Washington breach rules for Spokane businesses

Washington allows no more than 30 calendar days after a breach is discovered to notify affected residents 12. An incident requiring notice to more than 500 Washington residents also sends a report to the Attorney General within those 30 days, covering how many people were affected, what kinds of data, when it happened and a sample notice 12.

Washington's list of covered data is long. Full date of birth, student and military ID numbers, passport numbers, health insurance and medical information, and online account credentials can all trigger notice 13. A Spokane contractor or staffing firm that keeps military ID numbers for workers at Fairchild holds covered data.

Card data carries a separate risk. Under RCW 19.255.020, a business that fails to take reasonable care and causes a card breach can owe financial institutions the cost of reissuing cards 14. The law spares businesses whose card data was encrypted at the time, or that were certified PCI DSS compliant with an assessment completed within the prior year 14. Retailers, clinics and restaurants that take cards should keep that certification current.

The state still lacked a comprehensive consumer privacy law in October 2026 16, though the My Health My Data Act reaches consumer health data held by businesses outside HIPAA 15. FBI IC3 logged 25,619 Washington complaints in 2025, reporting $458.2 million lost 17. See our Washington breach law page and confirm details with counsel.

Cybersecurity services and Spokane's defense suppliers

Most Spokane firms should buy four things first: multifactor sign-in, EDR, filtered email and backups proven by real restores. Clinics and billing companies serving Providence, MultiCare or the VA add HIPAA safeguards; our healthcare IT guide covers those.

Businesses that work on Fairchild contracts carry federal duties too. CMMC has been paused in Phase 1 since July 2026 and third-party certification has no new date, but NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment requirements remain in force 18. Our CMMC overview tracks the status. For everyone else, our cybersecurity for small business guide lists controls by priority.

Co-managed IT for Spokane firms with an IT generalist

Spokane organizations that already pay an IT generalist often buy co-managed IT to add depth rather than a second hire. The provider brings RMM, security tooling and engineers for escalations. Meriplex's 2026 list price is $45 to $175 per employee monthly, set by scope 19; see our co-managed IT page.

The same model answers the thin-bench problem: a small local shop covers on-site work, a larger remote team handles monitoring, and the contract says which party does what.

Choosing an IT provider in Spokane's small-shop market

Spokane's providers are mostly small, so judge each one on bench depth and travel range first. Ask:

  • How many technicians do you have, and who covers when your lead engineer is away?
  • Do you reach sites in Spokane Valley and across the Inland Northwest, and how is travel billed?
  • Can you document PCI DSS scope and keep card data encrypted?
  • How would you help us meet Washington's 30-day notice deadline?
  • What happens to our data and passwords if we end the contract?

Exit terms and the rest of the contract are covered in picking an MSP. A firm with staff on the west side of the state can read our Seattle and Tacoma pages; for Idaho, see Boise. Other cities link from the managed IT services hub.

Common questions

How much does a 25-person Spokane office spend on IT support?

Roughly $30,000 to $75,000 annually under a managed contract, from the $100 to $250 monthly per-employee rate in 2026 provider guides 12. Without a contract, Spokane firms pay by the hour, at $75 to $250 1.

What does a managed service provider in Spokane handle?

It runs a company's IT for a monthly fee, using remote monitoring and management tools to patch, back up and secure devices, plus a help desk for users. Good Spokane providers also send technicians on site when hardware or networks fail.

Is it cheaper to hire a help desk tech in Spokane?

For small offices, rarely. A $63,460 local median becomes about $90,700 with benefits in our BLS-based estimate 45, more than a full year of managed IT for 25 people 12.

What does Washington require after a data breach?

Affected residents hear within 30 calendar days of discovery 12, and more than 500 affected Washington residents adds the Attorney General in that window 12. Covered data includes items such as date of birth and military ID numbers 13.

Are there cybersecurity companies in Spokane?

Yes, though few and mostly small; the county's IT services count was 170 in 2023 8. Some businesses pair a local provider for on-site work with a larger remote security team.

Do Spokane defense suppliers need CMMC?

Third-party CMMC certification is paused, and no restart date has been set 18. Self-assessment requirements and NIST SP 800-171 obligations still apply where contracts include them 18. Confirm with your contracting officer.
