The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA: $104,440) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Controlled unclassified information (CUI)
- CUI, short for controlled unclassified information, means sensitive but unclassified material tied to government work, such as technical drawings or logistics data for a defense contract, that federal rules say must be protected with specific safeguards when a contractor stores or sends it.
Managed IT services in Tacoma: prices and Seattle-level pay
Start from that per-worker band 12 when reading a Tacoma quote. Firms with defense or health care clients can expect to land in the upper half, because logging, documentation and compliance reporting take more provider time. Without a contract, hourly support runs $75 to $250 1.
The wage comparison uses the whole Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro, because the BLS data on O*NET has no Tacoma-Lakewood series. Entry-level pay there is high: user support specialists earned a median $78,330 in May 2025 and systems administrators $104,440 56. Benefits add 30% of compensation costs 9, which brings the two roles to about $111,900 and $149,200 a year (our calculation). Pierce County employers recruit from the same metro labor pool as Seattle, so they face those salaries too. Our breakdown of managed IT pricing shows what each level should include.
Tacoma's economy: Joint Base Lewis-McChord, health systems and logistics
Pierce County had 20,051 business establishments in 2023, with 4,434 employing 10 to 49 people and 849 employing 50 to 249 3. A mere 189, under 1% of the total, carried the Census code for computer systems design and related services 4, so many Tacoma buyers end up comparing local shops with Seattle-based providers.
Joint Base Lewis-McChord dominates the employer list. HUD estimates it employs about 54,000 military and civilian workers and has an economic impact of about $12.1 billion in the area 7. JBLM describes itself as the only Army power-projection platform west of the Rockies and is home to I Corps and the 62nd Airlift Wing 8. Engineering, construction, logistics, staffing and software firms that support the base and its units may handle federal contract information or CUI.
Health care is the second pillar. After JBLM, the largest employers are MultiCare Health System (8,264), the State of Washington (7,859) and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (5,682), with Amazon (1,800) and Boeing (1,550) also in the top 10 7. In August 2026 the Tacoma-Lakewood division counted 73,600 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 66,600 in education and health services and 57,700 in government, out of 348,700 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 11.

Get my Tacoma quoteWashington breach notice rules for Tacoma businesses
Under RCW 19.255.010, a Tacoma business has a hard ceiling of 30 calendar days from discovery to get notices to affected Washington residents, and should send them sooner if it can 12. A breach that calls for notifying more than 500 Washington residents goes to the Attorney General inside that same 30-day window 12. That filing asks for more than a sample letter 12:
- the number of residents affected
- the types of data involved
- the time frame of exposure
- a summary of the steps taken to contain the breach
- a sample notice
The report must be updated later if details were unknown at first 12.
Each of those items is an IT question. A Tacoma clinic or contractor should be able to pull access logs, list the data on a compromised system and show what was done to contain it, within days. The duty falls away if the breach is not reasonably likely to put consumers at risk of harm 12. Data secured with encryption that meets NIST standards is exempt unless the key was also taken 13.
Washington still lacks a California-style general privacy statute as of October 2026 21. Clinics, pharmacies and wellness businesses should check the My Health My Data Act, which covers consumer health data handled by any business operating in the state 14. Washington residents filed 25,619 IC3 complaints in 2025 reporting $458 million in losses 15. For the full text, see Washington's breach law explained.
Cybersecurity services and CMMC for Tacoma defense suppliers
A Pierce County defense supplier's security work is set largely by its contracts. Where DFARS 252.204-7012 appears, a contractor holding covered defense information has to meet NIST SP 800-171, get cyber incidents to DoD within 72 hours, keep images of affected systems for at least 90 days, and store data only in cloud services with security equivalent to FedRAMP Moderate 16. Bidding also takes a NIST SP 800-171 assessment no older than three years in the Supplier Performance Risk System (SPRS) 17.
CMMC status is in flux. On July 13, 2026 DoD froze the rollout in Phase 1 and suspended Phase 2 (once scheduled for November 10, 2026), while every Phase 1 self-assessment duty continues 18. With no restart date set, plan as if third-party assessments will return. Our CMMC overview, NIST SP 800-171 guide and CMMC compliance services page explain the work involved.
For firms with no defense work, the floor is multifactor login, watched endpoint protection (the MDR line in the table 10), filtered email and backups with proven restores. Clinics and their vendors should add a current HIPAA risk analysis.
Co-managed IT and security leadership in Tacoma
Tacoma firms that employ an IT generalist can add co-managed support for the parts that need tooling and round-the-clock attention: security monitoring, log retention for incident reports and patching. Meriplex's 2026 figures for that run $45 to $175 per worker monthly, depending on scope 19; see what co-managed IT covers.
A defense supplier also needs someone to own its System Security Plan and SPRS score. A part-time security lead can do that; SideChannel's published vCISO retainer for a company below 50 people is about $1,500 to $4,000 monthly 20.
Choosing a Tacoma provider for defense and health care work
Pick a provider whose experience matches your contracts. Ask:
- Have you taken clients through a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment and SPRS submission?
- Can you host CUI in an environment that meets the DFARS cloud requirement, or will you work with one that does?
- Do you sign BAAs when our clients are clinics or health systems?
- Where are your technicians, and is on-site time in Pierce County part of the fee?
Firms with staff up the I-5 corridor in Seattle or Portland, or across the state in Spokane, should ask whether one contract can cover every office. More questions are in our MSP shopping guide; other metros link from the managed IT services landing page.
