Defense rules a Dayton supplier faces in October 2026
| Requirement | Status now | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|

| NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 self-assessment | DoD keeps enforcing it during the pause 14 | Post a score in SPRS that is under three years old 17 |
| CMMC Level 1 (Self) and Level 2 (Self) | The only CMMC levels a contract may name 15 | Self-assess and affirm; no outside assessor for now |
| CMMC Level 2 (C3PAO) certification | On hold since July 13, 2026; restart date unannounced 14 | Not required today, though the schedule can move |
| Cloud services holding defense data | Covered by DFARS 7012 16 | The service must match FedRAMP Moderate-level security |
Estimate managed IT cost in Dayton
Managed IT, published per-user prices

Get a quote for 25 peoplePlan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek, OH: $95,680) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- A vCISO is a contracted, part-time security lead who owns a company's security plan, policies and compliance evidence, such as a NIST SP 800-171 assessment, at a fraction of an executive salary.
Managed IT services in Dayton: price range and hiring math
At 25 seats, the published band means $2,500 to $6,250 a month for a Dayton office 12. Defense suppliers tend to sit in the upper tiers, which one guide prices at $200 to $300 per seat 2, because logging, encryption and compliance paperwork go beyond a plain help desk plan.
The in-house benchmark: Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek systems administrators earned a $95,680 median in May 2025, only about $3,450 short of the U.S. figure 38. Private employers spend another 30% of total compensation on benefits 7, so that hire costs about $136,700 a year in our estimate; a help desk specialist at the $58,870 local median 6 works out near $84,100. Both are medians for the whole occupation; a hire who already knows NIST SP 800-171 comes from a smaller pool of candidates. How managed IT is priced breaks down the tiers.
Wright-Patterson, hospitals and the Montgomery County business base
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base lies northeast of Dayton and takes in parts of Greene and Montgomery counties 10. Its workforce of over 38,000, counting military, civilians and contractors, makes it Ohio's largest single-site employer 10. The base houses Air Force Materiel Command, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and the National Air and Space Intelligence Center 10. HUD estimates the base had an $11.6 billion economic impact on the Miami Valley in 2023 and calls it a hub for aerospace and medical research and development 11.
Health care comes next. Premier Health Partners (11,700) and Kettering Health Physician Partners (9,900) are the second and third largest employers, with Dayton Children's Hospital (4,200) and the Dayton VA Medical Center (2,900) also on the list 11. Government work, at 60,500 jobs, is about 15% of the metro's 401,800 nonfarm payroll, and education and health services leads all sectors at 81,700 (August 2026, preliminary) 9.
Montgomery County had 10,930 employer establishments in 2023; 3,166 employed 10 to 49 people and 729 employed 50 to 249 4. Census sorted 155 county establishments into computer systems design 12, a bucket that also holds software developers and consultants, not only support shops.

Get my Dayton quoteCMMC and DFARS for Dayton contractors in late 2026
The certification deadline moved; the underlying duties did not. On July 13, 2026 DoD froze CMMC at Phase 1, which left third-party Level 2 certification, originally due November 10, 2026, without any start date 14. Until that changes, a contract can name Level 1 (Self) or Level 2 (Self) and nothing higher 15.
Still binding on a Dayton supplier:
-
The DFARS 252.204-7012 clause, which the suspension memo leaves in force 15. It obliges contractors to run NIST SP 800-171 on covered systems, to tell DoD about a cyber incident inside 72 hours, and to hold images of the affected systems for 90 days or more 16.
-
Revision 2 of NIST SP 800-171, which DoD says it is still enforcing 14; bidders need an assessment younger than three years on file in SPRS 17.
-
The cost of proving it. DoD's own regulatory impact analysis priced a small company's Level 2 self-assessment, with its affirmation, at $34,277, apart from whatever the controls themselves cost 18.
Dates may shift once more, so keeping documentation and the SPRS score current costs a supplier nothing it would not spend anyway. Our CMMC status page tracks the pause, and the NIST 800-171 guide walks through the control families.
Ohio breach notice and the safe harbor for Dayton businesses
Ohio residents whose personal information was exposed must hear from a Dayton business within 45 days of discovery at the latest 5. No state agency gets a filing, though credit reporting agencies do when one breach produces notices to more than 1,000 Ohioans 5. A defense supplier hit by an incident may run two clocks at once: 72 hours to report to DoD under DFARS 16 and up to 45 days for Ohio residents 5.
Ohio's Data Protection Act lists NIST SP 800-171 as one of the frameworks a written security program can be measured against. A company that built such a program, kept it up and complied with it, in reasonable conformity with the framework, can raise an affirmative defense in breach tort suits 13. For a contractor already working toward 800-171, one set of documents serves both purposes. Counsel can say how the defense applies.
Ohio has yet to adopt a comprehensive consumer privacy statute (status as of October 2026) 20. In 2025 the FBI's IC3 took in 27,626 Ohio complaints and roughly $421.3 million in reported losses 19. Our Ohio breach law page has the details.
IT consulting, vCISO and co-managed support in Dayton
Small defense suppliers rarely need a full-time security officer, but they do need someone to own the 800-171 plan. SideChannel's 2026 figures put a vCISO for a company of 1 to 50 people at roughly $1,500 to $4,000 monthly 21; vCISO services explains the scope.
A Dayton shop that already has an IT lead can bring in outside help for monitoring, patching and alerts after hours. A 2026 published estimate from one provider starts co-managed coverage at $45 per user a month, reaching $175 once a SOC/SIEM layer is included 22. Practices in the Premier and Kettering orbit should also insist on a business associate agreement; HIPAA compliance services covers that work.
Choosing a Dayton managed service provider for defense work
Begin with proof of defense experience: has the provider walked a client through an 800-171 self-assessment and an SPRS score submission? Ask for redacted examples. Then cover:
-
Where will defense data live, and does each cloud service meet the FedRAMP Moderate equivalent that DFARS 7012 requires 16?
-
Who files the 72-hour incident report, and who holds the DoD-approved medium assurance certificate needed to submit it 16?
-
When something breaks on site, how many hours until a technician arrives, and is the visit covered?
-
What do we receive at exit: documentation, admin credentials and evidence files?
Our provider comparison guide adds contract questions. For other sites, Cincinnati sits just to the south, Columbus is the state capital, and Indianapolis works under Indiana's breach law; our list of covered metros has the rest.
Common questions
Which counties does Wright-Patterson Air Force Base cover?
Do Dayton defense subcontractors need CMMC certification now?
Third-party certification is not required at present. DoD halted the rollout at Phase 1 on July 13, 2026, so a contract can call for Level 1 (Self) or Level 2 (Self) only 1415. DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 self-assessments remain in force 1415; check your own clauses with the contracting officer or a lawyer.
