The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, IN: $89,770) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are a subscription arrangement in which an outside firm takes ongoing responsibility for a company's IT operations, including user support, device and network upkeep, backups and security monitoring, for a predictable monthly fee.
Managed IT services cost in Indianapolis
Published provider guides put managed IT for small businesses at $100 to $250 per user per month 2, and premium plans with heavier security at $200 to $300 1. Those are national ranges; local providers price against them.
Indianapolis pay is lower than in coastal markets, which narrows the gap between hiring and outsourcing but does not close it. The median wage for a network and computer systems administrator in the Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro was $89,770 in May 2025, and for a help desk specialist $60,080 34. With benefits at 30% of compensation costs 5, that sysadmin costs about $128,200 a year, based on BLS data.
Even a 25-person office buying the premium tier, about $90,000 a year, spends less than one loaded hire. The more useful question for Indianapolis firms is usually which tier, not whether to outsource. A health-adjacent office with patient data needs the security and backup features of a standard or premium plan; a small distributor might do fine at the basic level. Our managed IT pricing guide explains the tiers.
IT services in Indianapolis: who is buying and why
Marion County had 24,248 business establishments in 2023, including 6,210 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,707 with 50 to 249 6. The county had 339 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7. Expect a smaller field of local IT firms, with more providers serving the city from the suburbs or from regional offices.
Healthcare dominates the local economy. HUD names three health systems as the metro's largest employers: Indiana University Health, Ascension St. Vincent and Community Health Network 9. HUD also calls the area a center for pharmaceutical manufacturing and notes the airport hosts the second-largest FedEx Express hub in the nation 9. In August 2026 the metro had 192,500 education and health services jobs, 180,800 professional and business services jobs and 97,400 manufacturing jobs, out of 1,182,100 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 8.
The IT needs follow that mix:
- Medical, dental and therapy practices, billing companies and labs that need HIPAA-ready email, access logging and encrypted backups.
- Life sciences suppliers and contract manufacturers that need protected plant networks and tight vendor access.
- Logistics and distribution firms around the airport that cannot afford downtime on shipping systems.

Get my Indianapolis quoteIndiana privacy and breach rules for Indianapolis businesses
Indiana now has a comprehensive privacy law. The Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026 11. It applies to businesses that control or process personal data of at least 100,000 Indiana consumers a year, or at least 25,000 while earning more than half of gross revenue from selling personal data 11. There is no blanket small-business exemption, so a consumer-facing firm with a large customer list should check whether it crosses the line 11.
The breach law applies to everyone holding Indiana residents' data. Notice is due without unreasonable delay and no more than 45 days after discovery, and the Attorney General must be told whenever residents are notified, with no minimum count 10.
Health care practices also face federal deadlines. Under HIPAA, covered entities must notify individuals no later than 60 calendar days after discovering a breach of unsecured health information, and business associates must notify the covered entity within the same 60 days 13. An update to the HIPAA Security Rule was proposed in January 2025 but is still only a proposed rule; the current rule remains in effect 14. Your counsel can confirm which of these deadlines apply.
Cybersecurity services for Indianapolis healthcare and life sciences
Indiana residents and businesses filed 20,777 complaints with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025 and reported $233 million in losses 12. HIPAA Journal's analysis of federal data counts more than 700 large healthcare breaches nationally in 2025 15, which is why insurers and hospital partners now ask small practices and vendors detailed security questions.
The services that answer those questions are fairly standard: a documented risk analysis, MFA, encrypted and tested backups, endpoint detection and response, and audit logs you can produce on request. One 2026 cost guide puts managed backup with quarterly disaster recovery testing at $500 to $1,200 a month for a 20 to 50 person business 18. Our HIPAA compliance services guide explains what a provider should deliver, and our small business cybersecurity guide covers the baseline for everyone else. If you are dealing with an active incident, call your cyber insurer's hotline if you have a policy, report to the FBI at ic3.gov and preserve evidence before rebuilding anything.
IT consulting and co-managed support in Indianapolis
Larger practices and manufacturers with an internal IT lead often buy co-managed support rather than full outsourcing. One provider's 2026 published estimate puts co-managed IT at $45 to $175 per user per month 16; read how it works in our co-managed IT guide. One-time IT consulting for a system change or office move typically runs $150 to $250 an hour for external consultants, per a 2026 migration cost guide 17.
Choosing an IT company in Indianapolis
Start with on-site reach. Ask where technicians are based, whether site visits are included, and how they cover any offices you have in Cincinnati, Louisville or Chicago. Then ask whether the provider will sign a business associate agreement if you handle health data, and how it would help you meet the 45-day Indiana notice and the Attorney General filing. Our guide to choosing an MSP lists the rest, and our managed IT services overview sets out what a standard contract includes.
