The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN: $101,530) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are a contracted service in which an outside IT provider takes on the routine running, monitoring and protection of a business's technology for a recurring monthly fee.
Managed IT services in Cincinnati: what businesses spend
Outsourced IT for Cincinnati firms generally costs $100 to $250 a month per user in published guides 1; premium tiers with more security run $200 to $300 2. That is $30,000 to $75,000 a year for a 25-person office.
Hiring in-house costs far more. Systems administrators in the Cincinnati metro earned a median $101,530 in May 2025 3, close to the national $99,130 4. Benefits account for 30% of employer compensation costs 5, so one hire costs about $145,000 a year by our calculation. A help desk specialist at the local median of $59,350 19 comes to about $84,800. Hiring both comes to about $229,800, roughly three times the high end of a managed plan for 25 users.

IT support for Cincinnati's health care, consumer goods and finance firms
Health care leads Cincinnati's employer list: five of the area's ten largest employers are health care providers, including Cincinnati Children's, TriHealth, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, UC Health and Bon Secours Mercy Health 9. Procter & Gamble and GE Aviation are the largest manufacturing employers, and Fifth Third Bancorp and Western & Southern Financial Group are Fortune 500 finance firms headquartered in the area 9. HUD's counts date from 2021.
In August 2026 the metro had 191,000 education and health services jobs, 183,900 professional and business services jobs and 124,000 manufacturing jobs 8. Around the big names sit hundreds of smaller suppliers: packaging and marketing agencies serving consumer brands, machine shops, clinics, billing firms and insurance agencies.
Hamilton County had 21,087 employer establishments in 2023, including 5,706 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,508 with 50 to 249 6. It had 329 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7, a figure that includes software and consulting firms.
What these groups need from IT support in Cincinnati:
- Brand agencies and suppliers: secure file sharing and client security questionnaires answered on time.
- Clinics and health vendors: HIPAA safeguards; see our HIPAA compliance services guide.
- Manufacturers: protected plant networks and tested backups; see our manufacturing IT guide.

Get my Cincinnati quoteOhio, Kentucky and Indiana rules for Cincinnati businesses
A Cincinnati office with staff or customers on both sides of the river may face three different breach laws.
Ohio requires notice to affected residents no later than 45 days after discovery and has no Attorney General notice requirement 10. Ohio has no comprehensive privacy law 16. What Ohio offers instead is a litigation shield 11. Chapter 1354 lets a breached company plead an affirmative defense if its written security program reasonably tracked a recognized standard, for example the NIST Cybersecurity Framework or the CIS Controls 11. For consumer-facing firms that worry about lawsuits after a breach, that defense is a reason to put the program in writing.
Kentucky requires notice in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, with no Attorney General notice 12. Its Consumer Data Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026 13. The law reaches businesses that process data on 100,000 or more Kentucky consumers a year, and those with 25,000 or more that make over half their gross revenue selling personal data 13.
Indiana sets a 45-day limit after discovery and requires notice to the Attorney General whenever residents are notified 14. Its Consumer Data Protection Act also took effect January 1, 2026, with the same 100,000-consumer test 15.
Confirm which laws apply with counsel. Ohio recorded 27,626 FBI IC3 complaints and about $421.3 million in reported losses in 2025 17.
Cybersecurity services in Cincinnati
For Cincinnati firms, the best-value cybersecurity services do two jobs at once: reduce risk and produce the written program Ohio's safe harbor rewards. The working layer is the usual one for offices this size: MFA on every login, monitored endpoint protection, filtered email, backups you have restored at least once, and phishing drills. Monitored endpoint protection (MDR) is usually $8 to $25 per device monthly 18.
Then document it. A provider should map controls to a named framework and keep the evidence: policies, patch reports, access reviews and backup test logs. Our cybersecurity risk assessment guide and written information security plan page explain what that paperwork looks like.
Co-managed IT and IT consulting in Cincinnati
Mid-sized Cincinnati firms with one IT employee often choose co-managed IT, where the provider supplies monitoring, security tools and after-hours coverage while the employee runs daily operations. One provider publishes a range of $45 to $175 per user a month for this model 20.
Writing the security program, mapping data across three states or moving to the cloud are typical one-time engagements, with outside consultants listing $150 to $250 an hour 21. See our co-managed IT guide.
Choosing a managed service provider in Cincinnati
Ask Cincinnati providers questions that reflect the tri-state footprint:
- Do you send technicians to sites in Kentucky and Indiana, and at what cost?
- Does your incident plan account for Indiana's Attorney General notice and the 45-day limits in Ohio and Indiana?
- Which framework do you map our security program to, and do we keep the documents?
- At contract end, what do you return to us, and in what format?
More questions to ask are in our guide to choosing an MSP. For nearby offices, see our pages on managed IT in Louisville, Indianapolis and Columbus, or the managed IT services overview.
