Managed IT Services in Charleston

For a Charleston business, managed IT services cost between $100 and $250 a user each month in the pricing guides providers published for 2026 12. Joint Base Charleston was the area's largest employer in HUD's 2023 market analysis, with more than 24,900 people 3, so many local firms buying IT support also carry defense contract security clauses.

Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Charleston-North Charleston, SC: $97,480) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). South Carolina breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs must also be notified when a breach involves more than 1,000 residents. The full rule and statute link are in our South Carolina data breach notification law guide.

vCISO
vCISO stands for virtual chief information security officer, a contracted head of security who works part time: one named person who owns the security program, the policies and the compliance evidence, paid by retainer instead of an executive salary.

Charleston managed IT services: price ranges and the hiring math

The per-seat band above comes from 2026 provider guides 12, and for a 25-seat Charleston office it works out to $2,500 to $6,250 monthly. Without a contract, hourly support bills at $75 to $250, and an emergency outside business hours can cost $300 or more 1.

Hiring locally costs more than the salary suggests. Charleston-North Charleston systems administrators (the BLS network and computer systems administrator category) had a May 2025 median of $97,480, slightly below the $99,130 national figure 48. Load in benefits at the share BLS reports for private industry 6 and one employee, with nobody to cover vacations, costs over $139,000 a year in our math.

Defense work changes the math. A firm that must document NIST SP 800-171 controls usually pays near the high end, or adds a compliance retainer. Our breakdown of what managed IT costs and why shows what each price tier tends to include.

IT services for Charleston's base, hospital and aerospace economy

Charleston's IT demand starts with the military. HUD's 2023 market analysis counts Joint Base Charleston as the largest employer in the area, with more than 24,900 workers including about 10,200 active-duty members 3. The government sector also includes the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic and more than 60 DoD and other federal agencies 3. The base itself spans four installations, among them the Air Base and the Naval Weapons Station, on almost 24,000 acres 9.

A 2022 state study cited by HUD credits the military with supporting about 78,400 jobs and $12.7 billion a year in economic impact 3. Part of that money reaches local engineering shops, logistics firms, staffing companies and software contractors.

Two other large employers set different requirements. The Medical University of South Carolina employs about 17,000 people and Boeing about 6,500 3. Clinics and billing firms near MUSC need HIPAA-ready systems; machine shops and suppliers feeding the Boeing plant need plant-floor networks kept apart from office email.

Of Charleston County's 15,801 business establishments in 2023, 3,598 had 10 to 49 people on staff and 730 had 50 to 249 10. Preliminary August 2026 figures show 72,600 metro jobs in government and 70,900 in professional and business services 11.

DFARS and CMMC for Joint Base Charleston suppliers

Charleston firms that hold Controlled Unclassified Information under a DoD contract face security rules today, regardless of CMMC's status. Under DFARS 252.204-7012, covered systems must meet NIST SP 800-171, cyber incidents go to DoD within 72 hours of discovery, and an outside cloud storing that data has to meet a baseline equivalent to FedRAMP Moderate 12.

Primes feel this in their supply chain. Under DFARS 252.204-7020, a contractor may not award a covered subcontract unless the subcontractor has at least a Basic NIST SP 800-171 assessment from the last three years 13. A small Charleston sub without a current score can lose work on that point alone.

As for CMMC, the program is frozen. On July 13, 2026 DoD suspended Phase 2; DoD says the rollout holds at Phase 1, where self-assessments are still mandatory and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 enforcement continues 14. Until that changes, a contract can ask only for Level 1 (Self) or Level 2 (Self) 15. DoD has given no restart date, so plan for the schedule to move. Our CMMC program summary and walkthrough of NIST SP 800-171 cover the detail; your counsel or assessor should confirm what your contract requires.

South Carolina breach notice and insurance rules

South Carolina gives no day count for breach notice. The statute requires telling affected residents in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 16. A notice going to more than 1,000 persons at one time triggers two more reports on its timing, distribution and content: one to the Consumer Protection Division of the Department of Consumer Affairs, one to the nationwide consumer reporting agencies 16.

A knowing and willful violation carries an administrative fine of $1,000 for each resident whose information was accessible, and injured residents can sue 16. The complete rule is summarized on our South Carolina data breach law page.

Insurance agencies are the local exception to a light state rulebook. The South Carolina Insurance Data Security Act requires licensees to keep a written security program based on a risk assessment and to notify the Director of Insurance within 72 hours of determining a cybersecurity event 17. A licensee with fewer than 10 employees does not have to keep the written program 17.

No comprehensive consumer privacy statute had passed in South Carolina by October 2026 1819. South Carolinians filed 14,699 complaints with FBI IC3 in 2025 and reported losses of about $264 million 20.

Cybersecurity services and vCISO help in Charleston

For a defense supplier, cybersecurity services in Charleston mean evidence as much as tools. Assessors and primes ask for a system security plan, a SPRS score (the self-assessment result filed in DoD's Supplier Performance Risk System) and proof that each control works. Firms that handle only commercial data can start smaller: MFA, endpoint detection and response, filtered email and backups tested by restoring.

A 2026 market analysis puts mainstream managed detection and response at $8 to $25 for each endpoint monthly 21. Published vCISO retainers for companies below 50 employees sit around $1,500 to $4,000 a month 22. For a 40-person contractor, that person often owns the 800-171 work while the MSP runs the tools. When the role earns its cost is covered on our vCISO services page.

Co-managed IT and choosing a Charleston IT partner

A Charleston company that already employs an IT person usually keeps them and buys co-managed help for the monitoring, patching and night or weekend coverage one person cannot do alone. Meriplex's 2026 estimate for co-managed plans is $45 to $175 per seat monthly 23. How the work gets divided is explained on our co-managed IT services page.

Charleston County had 205 establishments in 2023 under the Census heading for computer systems design and related services 5. That count mixes in software developers and consultants, so fewer firms actually offer day-to-day support. Put these questions to each one:

  • Have you completed a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment with a client, and can you show a redacted plan?
  • Who files a DFARS 72-hour incident report, and who keeps the system images?
  • Can you sign a HIPAA business associate agreement for our clinic work?
  • Who comes on site when a server or firewall fails, and how is that time billed?

Contract clauses worth reading twice are listed in our MSP selection checklist. Firms that also support Navy work farther down the coast can compare Jacksonville, and those with inland offices can look at Greenville and Charlotte. Every other city we cover is listed from our main managed IT services page.

Common questions

What will a Charleston company pay each month for IT support?

Plan on $100 to $250 a seat monthly under a managed contract 12, or $75 to $250 an hour for support with no contract 1. A staff systems administrator here has a $97,480 median salary before benefits 4.

What do managed IT services in Charleston include?

Expect help desk support, management of devices and servers, patching, backups and basic security, all for one flat monthly fee. Defense suppliers should confirm in writing whether NIST SP 800-171 documentation and SPRS support are included or billed separately.

Is CMMC certification required for Charleston defense subcontractors right now?

No third-party certificate is required at the moment. With CMMC paused in Phase 1, a contract can demand Level 1 or Level 2 self-assessments only 15. The NIST SP 800-171 controls and 72-hour incident reports under DFARS 252.204-7012 still apply 12. Have counsel read your own contract.

How fast must a South Carolina business report a data breach?

There is no day limit. The law asks for notice in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 16. Once more than 1,000 persons are notified at one time, the Department of Consumer Affairs and the credit bureaus get a report too 16.

What should IT services in Charleston cost for a medical practice?

Most practices pay what other Charleston offices do, between $100 and $250 per user each month under 2026 provider guides 12. The difference is paperwork: the provider should sign a business associate agreement and help with your HIPAA risk analysis, so ask whether that is in the monthly fee or billed extra.

Is a vCISO worth it for a small Charleston contractor?

Often, if you hold controlled defense data. The retainer quoted for firms under 50 people is roughly $1,500 to $4,000 monthly 22, far less than a full-time security salary, and it puts one person in charge of the compliance file.
