- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are a subscription arrangement in which an outside provider takes ongoing responsibility for a business's IT support, systems monitoring, maintenance, backups and security, billed monthly per user or device.
Managed IT services in Raleigh: price ranges and the local wage comparison
The published range is $100 to $250 per user per month 1. One 2026 guide splits it into basic plans at $100 to $125, standard at $150 to $200 and premium at $200 to $300 2. For a 25-person office, the common range comes to $30,000 to $75,000 a year.
Raleigh's IT wages run slightly above the national level. The Raleigh-Cary median for systems administrators was $103,380 in May 2025 3, compared with $99,130 nationally 4. Adding benefits at BLS's 30% share 5 gives about $147,700 for one hire. For a 25-person office, a managed contract costs about half that or less and comes with after-hours coverage.

IT services for Research Triangle and Wake County businesses
Research Triangle Park's more than 200 organizations employ about 50,000 people across Wake and Durham Counties 9. Around them sits a large group of smaller firms: contract research organizations, biotech startups, engineering consultancies, software companies and the professional firms that serve them.
Wake County had 33,873 employer establishments in 2023, including 7,648 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,803 with 50 to 249 6. The county also had 1,235 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7, which counts software and consulting firms along with IT support providers.
Government is a big employer too. The State of North Carolina, including NC State University, is the largest single employer at more than 33,000 people, followed by Walmart and WakeMed 9; that HUD list dates from 2021. In August 2026 the metro had 156,700 professional and business services jobs, 110,700 in education and health services and 109,300 in government 8.
Those sectors want different things from IT services in Raleigh:
- Life sciences and research firms need validated systems, controlled lab data and strong access logs.
- Health care groups need HIPAA safeguards; see our HIPAA compliance services page.
- Firms that subcontract on federal research may face NIST SP 800-171 requirements; our CMMC overview explains the current status.

Get my Raleigh quoteNorth Carolina breach rules and privacy law
North Carolina's breach statute requires notice to affected residents without unreasonable delay 10. Unlike many states, it has no threshold for regulator notice: whenever any resident is notified, the business must also notify the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office without unreasonable delay 10. If more than 1,000 people are notified at one time, the nationwide consumer reporting agencies must be told as well 10.
For a small Raleigh firm, that means even a breach affecting a handful of customers puts you in touch with the state. Good logging and a written incident plan make that conversation shorter.
Take a Raleigh tax preparer whose mailbox is phished, exposing returns for 40 clients who live in North Carolina. If those records count as personal information under the statute, all 40 clients get a notice and so does the Consumer Protection Division, because the state sets no minimum 10. The FTC's separate notice duty under the Safeguards Rule starts only when unencrypted information of at least 500 consumers is acquired, so it would not apply here 19. Federal law still requires that preparer to keep a written information security plan, a point the IRS and Security Summit repeated in August 2026 20. Our written information security plan page explains what goes in one. Ask counsel to confirm the details.
North Carolina still lacks a comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 11. HIPAA, the FTC Safeguards Rule for tax preparers and lenders, and contract terms set most other requirements.
North Carolina ranked ninth in the FBI's 2025 complaint tables, with 25,940 complaints and about $431.6 million in reported losses 12.
Cybersecurity services and cybersecurity companies in Raleigh
For most Raleigh offices, cybersecurity services start with a short list: MFA everywhere, managed endpoint protection, email filtering, tested backups and staff training. Mainstream managed detection and response runs $8 to $25 per endpoint per month 13.
Research-heavy firms often need more. Sponsors and partners send security questionnaires, and grant or contract terms may require specific controls. A part-time vCISO can own that work; published retainers run about $1,500 to $4,000 a month under 50 employees 14.
Insurers ask for many of the same controls. Marsh counts MFA, EDR, tested backups and incident response plans among the baseline controls insurers now expect 15. See our cybersecurity for small business guide and our cyber insurance requirements page.
Co-managed IT and IT consulting in Raleigh
Raleigh companies with one IT person often do best with co-managed IT, where an outside team supplies monitoring, security tools and after-hours help. Depending on how much the outside team covers, one provider publishes a range of $45 to $175 per seat monthly 16.
Short projects, such as a Microsoft 365 migration, a lab network or a new office build-out, are usually hourly; outside consultants bill $150 to $250 per hour in a 2026 published guide 17. Our co-managed IT guide covers dividing duties and what to put in writing.
Choosing a managed service provider in Raleigh
Ask Raleigh providers questions tied to your sector and footprint:
- Have you supported research or life sciences clients with controlled data?
- How would you handle a North Carolina breach notice, including the Attorney General filing?
- Which parts of the Triangle do your technicians cover on site, and at what cost?
- What happens to our passwords, documentation and backups if we end the contract?
Research Triangle Park spans Wake and Durham Counties 9. A firm with a lab in the park and an office downtown should confirm both sites sit in the same service area at the same on-site rate. Ask who is dispatched when a lab network fails in the middle of a run, and whether that visit is covered or billed hourly. Use our guide to choosing an MSP to compare contracts side by side. For offices outside Wake County, our managed IT services overview links every market, including Charlotte, Richmond and Washington, DC.
Common questions
How much does IT support cost in Raleigh?
Should a Raleigh business hire IT staff or use a managed service provider?
Who must a North Carolina business notify after a data breach?
Does North Carolina have a consumer privacy law?
Not a comprehensive one as of October 2026 11. Sector rules such as HIPAA and the state breach law still apply. Check with counsel if you also serve customers in states that do have privacy laws.
What IT services do Research Triangle companies need?
Research firms usually need controlled access to lab and trial data, strong logging and documented security for sponsors. Some federal research subcontracts bring NIST SP 800-171 obligations. A provider should be able to show how it supports those clients.
