Managed IT Services in Northern Virginia

In published 2026 provider guides, a Northern Virginia business pays between $100 and $250 per user each month for managed IT services 12. Fairfax County firms won $41.3 billion in federal contract awards in fiscal 2024 9. That is why so much local IT work is shaped by NIST SP 800-171, the DFARS 7012 clause and a CMMC program now paused in Phase 1 1213.

Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV: $125,430) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). Virginia breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The Attorney General must also be notified of any breach. The full rule and statute link are in our Virginia data breach notification law guide.

Federal Contract Information (FCI)
FCI is contract information the government does not intend to release publicly, whether the government supplied it or a contractor produced it for the government while developing or delivering a product or service; public information and simple transactional data, like what is needed to process payments, do not count.

Managed IT services in Northern Virginia: costs against Washington-area pay

Managed IT for a 25-person Northern Virginia office costs well under one local administrator's pay: $30,000 to $75,000 a year at published seat prices 12. In Strategic Micro Systems' tiering, entry plans start around $100 to $125 per seat and security-heavy premium plans reach $200 to $300 2.

Wage data is published only for the whole Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro, the same figures our Washington, DC page uses. In May 2025 that metro's median systems administrator earned $125,430 and its median help desk specialist $77,860 34; the national administrator median was $99,130 6. Benefits add 30% of total compensation cost for private employers 5, so dividing salary by 0.70 puts one administrator at about $179,200 a year, more than twice the top of a 25-seat contract.

The hiring market is crowded too. Fairfax alone held 3,683 establishments coded by Census as computer systems design firms in 2023 8, more than one in nine of all establishments in the county. A small firm competes with that large IT industry for every technical hire. Tier-by-tier MSP pricing shows what each level includes.

Fairfax County's contractor economy and the Loudoun data center cluster

Federal spending is the core of the county economy. Fairfax County companies received $41.3 billion in federal contract awards in fiscal 2024, $19.2 billion from defense agencies and $22.1 billion from civilian ones, according to the county's economic development authority 9. General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Leidos, Booz Allen Hamilton and SAIC are among the top contractors headquartered there 9. Metro-wide, business services and government jobs made up about 44% of the preliminary August 2026 payroll count 11.

Census counted 31,931 business establishments in Fairfax County in 2023, 6,638 of them employing 10 to 49 people and 1,989 employing 50 to 249 7. Those counts leave out Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William counties and the independent cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church, so the Northern Virginia total is larger.

Next door, Loudoun County reports the highest concentration of data centers in the world: about 56.5 million square feet built or under construction across roughly 233 buildings as of March 1, 2026, with 35.7 million more approved 10. Those buildings produced $1.2 billion in property tax revenue in fiscal 2026, 39% of the county budget 10. For small businesses, that puts hosting and colocation space close at hand, along with a large base of electrical, construction and service firms that need IT of their own.

CMMC, DFARS and FAR duties for Northern Virginia contractors

For a Fairfax defense subcontractor, the rules in force today are contract clauses, not a certificate. Under DFARS 252.204-7012, any system that stores or processes covered defense information must implement NIST SP 800-171, and a cyber incident goes to DoD no later than 72 hours after discovery 14. The July 2026 implementing memo keeps those duties in effect 13. DFARS 252.204-7021 obliges a contractor to keep the CMMC status its contract names, affirm compliance in SPRS each year and flow the right level down to subcontractors 16.

CMMC itself has stalled. Phase 1, self-assessments only, began November 10, 2025. DoD halted Phase 2 on July 13, 2026; that phase would have brought in third-party C3PAO certification, and no restart date exists 12. Until the pause ends, a solicitation can name only the two self-assessment levels, and existing contracts are to be modified to drop C3PAO requirements 13. DoD intends to keep holding contractors to NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 12. Dates may move again; our CMMC status page tracks them.

The two self-assessment levels differ sharply in effort:

  • Level 1 protects Federal Contract Information through a self-assessment each year, with affirmation, against FAR 52.204-21's 15 security requirements 12. Every requirement must be met, because no plan of action is allowed at this level 15. See our CMMC Level 1 guide.
  • Level 2 protects CUI using Rev 2 of NIST SP 800-171, all 110 requirements 12, self-assessed every three years with results posted in SPRS 23. Our NIST SP 800-171 guide lists them.

In its regulatory impact analysis, DoD put small-entity assessment support at $5,977 for Level 1 and $34,277 for each Level 2 self-assessment, not counting what it costs to implement the controls 17. Civilian agency work, the larger share of Fairfax awards 9, carries its own contract security terms, so read each award. Your contracting officer or a lawyer can confirm what your awards require.

Virginia breach and privacy law for Northern Virginia firms

Virginia brings the Attorney General into every reportable breach. Both the affected Virginia residents and the Attorney General's office get notice, without unreasonable delay, and the law sets no minimum count 18. A mailing to more than 1,000 people at once also requires telling the Attorney General and the national credit bureaus when, how and what was sent 18.

The statute exempts encrypted or redacted data, but not if it was obtained unencrypted or if someone with the key was involved 18. For a contractor, one incident can start two clocks, the state notice and the 72-hour DFARS report to DoD 14, and the incident plan should name who handles each. Our Virginia breach notification guide covers the rest of the statute.

The Consumer Data Protection Act, effective January 1, 2023, reaches a business only once it controls or processes data on 100,000 or more Virginia consumers in a year, or on 25,000 or more when over 50% of gross revenue comes from selling personal data 19.

Virginia's 25,314 IC3 complaints in 2025 carried $476.1 million in reported losses, 10th among states 20.

Cybersecurity services and co-managed IT for Fairfax contractors

Co-managed IT often fits a Fairfax contractor that delivers IT to agencies but runs its own office systems informally: internal staff keep daily support, while a provider adds round-the-clock monitoring, security tooling and compliance evidence. Meriplex's 2026 numbers put that model at $45 to $175 a person per month 22. Standalone MDR is about $8 to $25 for each device monthly 21.

Cloud choices matter once CUI is involved. DFARS 7012 says a cloud service holding covered defense information must match FedRAMP Moderate baseline security 14; when a GCC High enclave fits walks through the choice.

Northern Virginia IT providers: questions that separate them

Ask each Northern Virginia candidate for evidence, not a client list:

  • Which clients have you taken through a CMMC self-assessment and the yearly SPRS affirmation?
  • Can you keep a system security plan current as our systems change?
  • Who helps us prepare the 72-hour DoD report and the Virginia Attorney General notice after an incident?
  • Which technicians cover Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington in person, and what does a visit cost?

For termination and handover clauses, see what to ask before signing with an MSP. If you also have staff in Washington, DC, Baltimore or Richmond, compare those pages, or open the full city list.

Common questions

What do Northern Virginia businesses pay for managed IT services?

A managed plan runs between $100 and $250 a user per month in published 2026 guides 12, so 25 people spend $30,000 to $75,000 over a year. One systems administrator hired in the Washington metro earns a $125,430 median before benefits 3.

Is hourly IT support in Northern Virginia cheaper than a contract?

Only for light users. Break-fix rates are published at $75 to $250 for each hour, and emergency calls at $300 or more 1; a firm needing help weekly usually spends less on a flat monthly plan.

Do Northern Virginia contractors need CMMC certification in 2026?

Not from a third-party assessor. Phase 2 has been suspended since July 13, 2026, so a contract can call only for self-assessed Level 1 or Level 2 1213. The 7012 clause and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 still bind defense contractors, and dates may shift; check each contract with the contracting officer or a lawyer.

How do CMMC Level 1 and Level 2 differ for a Fairfax contractor?

Level 1 covers Federal Contract Information and means a yearly self-assessment against FAR 52.204-21's 15 requirements 12. Level 2 covers CUI: 110 requirements from NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 12, self-assessed once every three years and posted in SPRS 23.

After a breach, which Virginia offices and people get notice?

The Attorney General's office and every affected Virginia resident, without unreasonable delay and with no minimum headcount 18. A defense contractor may separately owe DoD a cyber incident report inside 72 hours under DFARS 252.204-7012 14.

What should a Fairfax contractor's MSP produce besides help desk work?

A maintained system security plan, evidence for every NIST control, and support for the yearly SPRS affirmation that DFARS 252.204-7021 calls for 16. Name each deliverable in the contract.
