Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Greensboro-High Point, NC: $88,580) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

North Carolina breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. The Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division must also be notified of any breach. The full rule and statute link are in our North Carolina data breach notification law guide.

Operational technology (OT)
OT, or operational technology, is computing that drives machines instead of paperwork, such as machine controllers, production line computers, building systems and warehouse automation.

Managed IT services in Greensboro: costs and local wages

Office seats follow the per-employee band in 2026 guides 12. Plant floors and warehouses add devices that are not tied to a user, so many manufacturers get a blended quote: per user for office staff and per device for shared terminals and servers.

IT pay in the Greensboro-High Point metro is below the national level. The May 2025 median was $88,580 for systems administrators and $55,440 for help desk specialists 34, compared with $99,130 nationally for administrators 6. With benefits at 30% of total compensation 5, an administrator costs about $126,500 a year by our calculation.

Lower wages make one in-house technician affordable, but one person cannot cover the second shift when a line goes down. That is why the glance table adds disaster recovery to the managed column. Our guide to managed IT costs lists what each tier should include.

IT services for Greensboro manufacturers, distributors and Cone Health

Greensboro's economy is built on making and moving goods. In August 2026, trade, transportation and utilities employed 83,600 people in the metro and manufacturing 47,300, out of 374,600 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 9. HUD describes manufacturing as a core, diverse part of the economy, with plants producing textiles, tobacco, chemicals, large motor vehicles, plastics, aircraft and semiconductors 10. HUD also reports a Toyota battery plant in the region, a $13.9 billion investment expected to create more than 5,000 jobs, due to begin operating in early 2025 10.

Health care anchors the rest. Cone Health is the metro's largest employer with 13,000 workers, ahead of the City of Greensboro (3,500) and UNC Greensboro (3,000) 10. Clinics and vendors in its orbit need HIPAA compliance services.

Guilford County had 14,306 establishments in 2023; 3,454 employed 10 to 49 people and 884 employed 50 to 249 7. Only 204 county businesses fell under the code for computer systems design and related services 8, software firms among them, so the support pool is smaller still. Our manufacturing IT guide covers plant networks in more depth.

Plant floor networks and ransomware recovery

For a Greensboro manufacturer, the IT failure that hurts most is often downtime, not stolen data. Per Sophos's 2026 global survey, compromised identities opened 79% of ransomware attacks, and a mere 16% of victims got back up within a day 16. At-Bay traced 80% of ransomware hitting its insureds to a remote access tool 17, the same kind of tool equipment vendors use to service plant machines.

That points to a short list of fixes:

  • Separate production and office networks, with a managed firewall between them. Managed firewall service typically runs $50 to $300 a month 18.
  • Put vendor remote access behind MFA and turn it on only when needed.
  • Inventory old Windows machines on the floor. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support in October 2025; paid extended security updates for businesses start at $61 a device in year one and double annually 19.
  • Keep backups off the network and test a full restore of the ERP system.

Recovery targets and test schedules are explained on our BDR page.

North Carolina breach rules for Greensboro companies

In North Carolina, affected residents get notice without unreasonable delay, and each such notice, whatever the number of people, comes with a report to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division 11. When more than 1,000 people are notified in one batch, the nationwide credit bureaus must be told as well 11.

The definition of personal information reaches ordinary business records. A person's name combined with a checking, savings, credit card or debit card account number counts 1213. Encrypted data is exempt, unless the key or process to decrypt it was taken too 12. An IT vendor that discovers a breach in data it holds for you must tell you immediately 11.

Take a Greensboro distributor whose order system is breached, exposing the names and card numbers of 600 customers in the state. Each customer gets notice and so does the Consumer Protection Division, even though the count is well under 1,000 11. Had the card numbers been encrypted with the key stored elsewhere, notice might not be required 12.

No broad consumer privacy statute had passed in North Carolina as of October 2026 14. The state ranked 12th in reported IC3 losses in 2025, at $431.6 million 20. Our North Carolina breach law page has the detail; confirm your obligations with counsel.

Co-managed IT and project consulting for Greensboro plants

Many Greensboro plants already employ one IT person who knows the equipment. Keep them, and let a co-managed IT provider add monitoring, security tooling and a night desk; Meriplex's 2026 price list puts that at $45 to $175 per employee monthly 21.

Projects such as splitting a plant network, moving a file server to Microsoft 365 or preparing for a customer's supplier audit are usually billed hourly. Outside consultants charge $150 to $250 hourly in a 2026 guide 22. Scoping advice is on our IT consulting services page.

Choosing a Greensboro IT company that knows plant floors

The right Greensboro provider has already worked on plant floors and in warehouses. Ask:

  • Have you segmented a production network from office IT, and can we talk to that client?
  • Who answers when a line computer fails on the second shift, and is a site visit included?
  • How do you control remote access by equipment vendors?
  • How often do you test a full restore, and will you show us the results?

Run the contract past our MSP contract checklist before you sign. Companies with plants or offices elsewhere in the Carolinas can compare Durham, Raleigh and Charlotte; the managed IT services home page reaches every other city.

Common questions

What do Greensboro managed IT services cost per user?

Figure $100 to $250 per employee monthly from 2026 provider guides 12, or $30,000 to $75,000 a year at 25 employees. Manufacturers should add backup and disaster recovery, which one provider prices at $500 to $1,200 a month with quarterly testing 15.

How much does IT support cost in Greensboro without a contract?

Hourly rates run $75 to $250, and emergency calls can cost $300 or more 1. For plants that need fast response on nights and weekends, a managed contract usually costs less over a year.

What should a Greensboro managed service provider handle on a plant floor?

Beyond help desk and patching, it should protect the boundary between office and plant networks, control vendor remote access, monitor for ransomware and test recovery of production systems. Ask for examples from other plant clients.

What would an in-house IT employee cost a Greensboro company?

The Greensboro-High Point median is $88,580 for a systems administrator and $55,440 for a help desk specialist 34. With benefits the administrator is roughly $126,500 a year, our estimate using BLS figures 5.

Does a North Carolina business have to report a small breach to the state?

Yes. There is no size floor: any resident notice triggers a report to the Consumer Protection Division 11. Credit bureaus are added above 1,000 people notified at once 11.

What IT services do Greensboro companies need for old plant computers?

An inventory first, then a plan to replace, isolate or pay for security updates. Extended Windows 10 updates for business cost $61 a device in the first year after support ended in October 2025 19.
