The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Tucson, AZ: $87,780) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). Get my Tucson quoteArizona breach notice rule: notify affected residents within 45 days. The Attorney General and the Arizona Department of Homeland Security must also be notified when a breach involves more than 1,000 residents. The full rule and statute link are in our Arizona data breach notification law guide.
- Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
- CUI refers to government information that is not classified but that law or policy requires to be protected, such as defense drawings and specifications, and a contractor holding it on its systems must meet the security requirements written into its contract.
How much managed IT and IT support cost in Tucson
That per-login band 12 is the yardstick for full managed IT here. Support bought ad hoc, with no contract, bills at $75 to $250 per hour, and emergency calls start at $300 1. A shop that needs controlled defense data kept in a separate environment should expect quotes toward the top of the range.
Tucson's IT salaries trail the national figures. Tucson-metro network and computer systems administrators earned an $87,780 median in May 2025 and computer user support specialists $57,660 34; nationally, administrators sat at $99,130 6. Benefits add 30% of total compensation 5, so the loaded cost of the administrator is about $125,400, our calculation.
Even at Tucson pay, one hire costs more than a managed plan for 25 users and cannot cover the federal reporting deadlines alone over a holiday weekend. Tiers are laid out in what managed IT costs.
Tucson employers: missiles, an air base, a university and hospitals
Defense manufacturing gives Tucson a supplier base unlike most metros its size. HUD lists the University of Arizona (19,850 employees), Raytheon Missiles & Defense (14,050) and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (9,850 military and civilian, about 6,325 active duty) as the three largest employers 10. Manufacturing grew strongly from 2016 to 2019, partly from a $550 million expansion of the Raytheon production facilities, and a new special operations wing at Davis-Monthan is expected to add about 1,300 personnel 10. The base had an estimated $3.5 billion economic impact in 2023 10.
Health care and government round out the list. Banner-University Medical Center Tucson (7,950) and Tucson Medical Center (5,275) are both major employers, as are Pima County (7,300) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (5,725) 10. In August 2026 the metro had 75,800 education and health services jobs, 72,200 government jobs and 28,500 manufacturing jobs out of 399,100 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 9.
Pima County had 21,381 business establishments in 2023, including 5,144 with 10 to 49 employees and 996 with 50 to 249 7. Of those, 258 had the Census code for computer systems design and related services 8; software and consulting firms share it with support providers.

Get my Tucson quoteDFARS and CMMC for Tucson defense suppliers
Machine shops, electronics assemblers and engineering firms that hold defense drawings must follow DFARS 252.204-7012 whether or not CMMC certification is on the calendar. Under that clause, covered systems meet NIST SP 800-171, and a discovered cyber incident goes to DoD inside 72 hours through the DIBNet portal, signed with a medium assurance certificate 13. Affected system images are kept for at least 90 days after the report 13. Any cloud service storing that data must meet security equivalent to the FedRAMP Moderate baseline 13.
CMMC itself is on pause. DoD halted the rollout in Phase 1 in July 2026, with no restart date yet for third-party certification 11. Contracts can carry only the self-assessed Level 1 or Level 2 requirement during the review, and the 7012 duties continue 12. Level 1, for firms with only Federal Contract Information, is an annual self-assessment against 15 FAR requirements 11.
For IT, that means a provider who can buy the reporting certificate in advance, keep logs long enough to support an investigation and set up compliant cloud tenants. Our pages on CMMC, GCC High and NIST SP 800-171 explain each piece. Confirm what your contract requires with your contracting officer or counsel.
Arizona breach notice alongside federal reporting
Arizona gives a business 45 days from determining a breach occurred to notify affected individuals 14. Past the 1,000-person line (more than 1,000 notified), written notices also go to the Attorney General, the Director of the Arizona Department of Homeland Security and the three largest consumer reporting agencies 14. The homeland security notice was added in 2022 14.
Two clocks can run at once for a Tucson defense supplier. Picture a shop whose file server is encrypted by ransomware and holds both controlled drawings and payroll records for 1,100 current and former workers. The DoD incident report is due within 72 hours of discovery 13. Employee notices are due within 45 days of determining the breach, and because more than 1,000 people are involved, the state officials and credit bureaus are added 14. A provider should hold one incident plan that tracks both.
Arizona still had no comprehensive consumer privacy statute in October 2026 15. Its 28,868 FBI IC3 complaints in 2025 ranked seventh among states by count 16. Read the Arizona breach law summary and check specifics with counsel.
Tucson security priorities and co-managed IT
MFA on email and remote access, email filtering, endpoint detection and response, and offline backups come first for Tucson firms, roughly in the order attackers tend to arrive. Phishing led the technical root causes of ransomware in Sophos's 2026 U.S. survey of mid-sized organizations (100 to 5,000 staff), where recovery averaged $2.51 million 19. Our cybersecurity for small business guide covers each control.
Larger Tucson suppliers often have an IT manager who knows the shop floor but not federal reporting. Co-managed IT fills that gap, with the provider supplying monitoring, the security stack and compliance paperwork; Meriplex's published 2026 pricing is $45 to $175 per login monthly 17. A one-time enclave build or Microsoft 365 move is usually billed hourly, at $150 to $250 for outside consultants in a 2026 guide 18.
The 72-hour test for a Tucson managed service provider
The most useful single test of a Tucson provider is what it would do in the first 72 hours of an incident. Then ask:
- Have you supported a DFARS 7012 client, and do you help clients obtain the DoD reporting certificate?
- Where would our controlled data live, and does that cloud meet the FedRAMP Moderate equivalency rule?
- Do your technicians come on site to our plant, and at what rate?
- What do we receive, including logs and admin credentials, if we cancel?
More questions sit in our guide to selecting an MSP. For other Southwest locations, see Scottsdale, Phoenix and El Paso, or open the managed IT services hub.
