The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Albuquerque, NM: $86,540) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Co-managed IT
- Co-managed IT is an arrangement in which a company keeps its own IT staff and contracts an outside provider for specific layers, such as monitoring, security tools, after-hours coverage or project help, with the split of duties written into the agreement.
Managed IT services in Albuquerque: quotes and local pay
Full managed IT in Albuquerque follows that per-seat band from 2026 guides 12. Strategic Micro Systems sorts it into three tiers: $100 to $125 for basic plans, $150 to $200 for standard, $200 to $300 for premium 2. Hourly help outside a contract costs $75 to $250, and an emergency visit $300 or more 1.
IT pay in Albuquerque runs below the national level. Albuquerque network and computer systems administrators had an $86,540 median in May 2025, roughly $12,600 below the $99,130 US figure 36, and help desk specialists made $51,710 4. Factor in benefits at the share BLS reports for private employers 5 and our estimate for the administrator is about $123,600 annually.
That makes an internal hire look more affordable here than in higher-wage markets. For a 25-person office, though, managed IT still lands at $30,000 to $75,000 a year and covers vacations, nights and security tools that one person cannot. Larger firms often keep one local hire and buy the rest. What each tier should include is listed in our managed IT cost guide.
IT services for Albuquerque's labs, base and university economy
Federal science and defense spending sets the tone for IT services in Albuquerque. HUD names Kirtland Air Force Base as the metro's largest employer with 23,000 people, including 4,200 active-duty military, followed by Sandia National Laboratories (14,125) and the University of New Mexico (13,950) 10. The base had more than $7.5 billion in local economic impact in 2024 10.
Sandia matters most to small firms. In 2025 the lab reported a record $5.2 billion in economic impact, $1.03 billion spent with small businesses, $463 million of it with New Mexico small businesses, and 335 new small business suppliers 11. Machine shops, engineering consultancies, staffing agencies and facilities contractors all compete for that work, and each one has to answer security questions to win it.
Government held 80,100 of the metro's 418,100 nonfarm jobs in August 2026, about 19%, alongside 75,400 in education and health services and 62,800 in professional and business services (preliminary) 9.
Bernalillo County had 16,349 business establishments in 2023. Of those, 4,142 had 10 to 49 employees and 869 had 50 to 249 7. 232 local businesses were coded computer systems design and related services 8; support shops are only part of that number, next to software and engineering firms.

Get my Albuquerque quoteCMMC and contract security for Kirtland and Sandia suppliers
Albuquerque firms working on Defense Department contracts still carry cybersecurity duties while CMMC is on hold. Since July 13, 2026, implementation has been frozen in Phase 1, and the third-party Level 2 assessments that were to begin November 10, 2026 have not been rescheduled 17. While the review runs, contracting officers can only require the self-assessed versions of Level 1 and Level 2, and the incident reporting and safeguarding clause, DFARS 252.204-7012, stays in force 18. The DoD CIO also says NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 compliance will be enforced during the pause 17. Expect the timeline to move again.
Lab work and base work do not always come with the same clauses. Read the security terms in your own subcontract before assuming which rules reach you, and keep a current self-assessment score if any DoD work carries the 7012 clause. A provider that has already scored a client against NIST SP 800-171 can save months. Our CMMC overview tracks what is in force, and your contracting officer or counsel can confirm what your contract requires.
New Mexico breach notice and security duties
New Mexico's deadline for telling affected residents is 45 calendar days from discovery, unless law enforcement asks for a delay 12. If one breach calls for notice to more than 1,000 New Mexico residents, the Attorney General and the major consumer reporting agencies get notice inside the same 45 calendar days 13. That notice must give the number of residents notified and include a copy of the notice 13. Businesses covered by HIPAA or the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act are exempt from the state law and follow their federal rules instead 12.
The same act sets two security duties for any business holding New Mexico residents' personal information: keep reasonable security procedures, and require by contract that service providers who receive that information do the same 14. If your IT provider receives that information, it is one of those service providers, so the security terms in your managed services agreement are part of your own compliance. Ask for them in writing.
Knowing or reckless violations carry real penalties: a court may impose the greater of $25,000 or $10 per failed notice, up to $150,000 19. No comprehensive consumer privacy statute existed in New Mexico as of October 2026 15. FBI IC3 counted 5,688 complaints from the state in 2025, with about $85.6 million reported lost 16. Our New Mexico breach law page has the full detail.
Security spending and co-managed IT for Albuquerque firms
Most Albuquerque firms should spend their first security dollars on the controls a prime contractor or insurer will ask to see. That list: multifactor sign-in for email and remote access, EDR, patch reports, backups kept off the network and a written incident plan. Our cybersecurity guide for small business prices each one.
Because local wages are low, co-managed IT is a common fit. A firm keeps an in-house technician at about $73,900 loaded, by our calculation from the local help desk median 45, and buys monitoring, security tooling and senior engineers from a provider. Meriplex puts that shared model at $45 to $175 per seat monthly for 2026, scaled to scope 20; our co-managed IT page explains the split.
Project work, such as standing up a separate environment for controlled defense data, is often billed hourly; outside consultants bill $150 to $250 hourly in one 2026 guide 21.
Picking an Albuquerque managed service provider
Pick an Albuquerque provider that can prove it has handled contract security work, beyond help desk tickets. Ask:
- Have you supported a client through a NIST SP 800-171 self-assessment or a prime's security questionnaire?
- Will you sign contract terms that meet New Mexico's service provider security requirement?
- Which sites do your technicians visit in person, and is that time included?
- How do we get our admin accounts, documentation and backups back if we leave?
More questions, and what good answers sound like, are in our MSP selection guide. Firms with offices elsewhere in the region can compare El Paso, Colorado Springs and Lubbock, or return to all managed IT services locations.
Common questions
What will IT support cost an Albuquerque office?
What should a managed service provider in Albuquerque handle?
For a fixed monthly fee it answers staff tickets, keeps laptops and servers patched, watches backups and runs the core security tools. For local defense and lab suppliers, a good provider also produces the evidence a prime contractor or contracting officer asks for. Scope varies, so compare written proposals line by line.
Should an Albuquerque firm hire IT staff or outsource?
Below about 40 staff, outsourcing usually wins. One local systems administrator has an $86,540 median salary, near $123,600 with benefits in our BLS-based estimate 35, versus $30,000 to $75,000 a year to cover 25 people under a managed contract 12. Larger firms often keep one hire and add co-managed support.
Has CMMC certification started for Albuquerque defense contractors?
How long does an Albuquerque business have to give breach notice?
What should an Albuquerque IT services contract include?
Clear scope, on-site terms, exit terms and written security commitments. New Mexico law requires businesses to make service providers that receive residents' personal information keep reasonable security by contract 14, so those clauses belong in the agreement.
