The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA: $102,950) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed service provider
- A managed service provider (MSP) is an outside IT company that takes ongoing responsibility for a business's computers, network, cloud accounts, backups and security under a monthly contract, rather than billing only when something breaks.
Managed IT services in Portland: typical pricing
A Portland business with 10 to 100 employees will usually see quotes between $100 and $250 per user per month for full managed IT, according to 2026 pricing guides from providers 12. Older survey data lines up: Syncro's 2023 MSP report found an average of $151 per user 8.
Per-user pricing normally bundles help desk, device management, patching and backup monitoring. Security-heavy plans with round-the-clock monitoring cost more, and one 2026 guide puts the top of the typical US range at $400 per user 9.
Wages set the comparison. Portland-area systems administrators earned a median $102,950 in May 2025, and help desk specialists $65,880, both above the national medians of $99,130 and $61,860 361011. For line-by-line detail on plan tiers, see our managed IT pricing breakdown.
Who buys IT services in Portland
Multnomah County had 27,204 business establishments in 2023, with 6,322 employing 10 to 49 people and 1,287 employing 50 to 249 4. The county also had 414 computer systems design and services establishments, the local pool of IT providers 4.
Healthcare and advanced manufacturing set the tone. OHSU, Providence, Intel, Legacy Health and Kaiser Permanente top the region's employer list 12, and manufacturing accounted for 112,000 metro jobs in August 2026 (preliminary) 13. The same BLS data shows 210,900 jobs in education and health services, 184,600 in professional and business services and 152,400 in government 13.
That creates two distinct buyer groups:
-
Clinics, labs and health vendors that exchange data with the big systems and need HIPAA safeguards and business associate agreements. See HIPAA compliance services.
-
Manufacturers and suppliers whose plant-floor systems, design files and supplier portals need uptime and segmentation, not just help desk coverage.

Get my Portland quoteOregon privacy and breach laws that reach smaller firms
Oregon's privacy law can reach smaller organizations. The Oregon Consumer Privacy Act has been in effect since July 1, 2024 14. It applies to any business that handles personal data of 100,000 or more Oregon consumers a year, or 25,000 or more while earning at least 25% of revenue from selling data 14. It has no small-business exemption, and the Oregon DOJ says nonprofits are covered too 14.
A Portland retailer, membership group or software firm with a large customer list can cross that line without being large itself. Your IT provider should be able to map where that data lives.
Oregon's breach statute requires notice to affected consumers within 45 days, and the Attorney General must be notified when more than 250 consumers receive notice 5. A separate provision, ORS 646A.622, requires businesses and their vendors to maintain reasonable safeguards, including proper disposal 15.
Take a Portland online retailer whose breach exposes 1,200 Oregon customers. It must notify them within 45 days, tell the Attorney General because more than 250 people are involved, and tell the consumer reporting agencies because more than 1,000 are affected 5. Since ORS 646A.622 extends the safeguards duty to vendors, your IT provider's contract should also spell out how it protects, and later disposes of, the data it handles for you 15.
Firms with staff or customers across the river should note that Washington sets a 30-day deadline and requires Attorney General notice above 500 residents 16. Oregon logged 12,477 FBI IC3 complaints and about $193 million in reported losses in 2025 17.
Cybersecurity services for Portland businesses
The most useful security spending for a Portland small business closes the doors attackers use most. The 2026 Verizon DBIR found exploitation of vulnerabilities was the top way into breaches at 31%, and third parties were involved in 48% of breaches 18.
That points to three priorities:
-
Patch and inventory. Know every device and app, and patch internet-facing systems first.
-
Vendor access. Limit and log what outside vendors, including your IT provider, can reach.
-
Identity. Require MFA everywhere; Microsoft research measured a 99.22% drop in account compromise risk 19.
Manufacturers should check one more item: older plant-floor and lab PCs. Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, and business Extended Security Updates cost $61 per device for the first year, doubling each year after 20. Machines that cannot be upgraded should be isolated from the office network.
Our small business cybersecurity guide walks through each layer, and managed detection and response explains 24/7 monitoring.
Co-managed IT and consulting for Portland firms with IT staff
Portland firms with an internal IT lead often need extra hands or senior advice rather than a full outsourcing contract. Co-managed plans fill gaps such as after-hours monitoring or security tooling; one provider's 2026 estimate is $45 to $175 per user per month 21. Read how co-managed IT works.
For planning work such as a cloud move or a network refresh, external consultants are published at $150 to $250 an hour 22, and part-time vCIO retainers at $2,000 to $10,000 a month 23. Our IT consulting guide compares the models.
How to choose an IT provider in Portland
Pick the provider whose scope, response commitments and exit terms are written down, not the one with the longest service list. Questions worth asking:
-
Which tasks are on site, and is travel inside the metro included?
-
Will you sign a business associate agreement if we handle patient data?
-
How will you help us meet Oregon's 45-day notice window after an incident?
-
If a server or plant-floor PC fails overnight, who answers, and when can someone be on site?
-
Do you cover offices on the Washington side of the metro, in Vancouver, without a travel charge?
-
Who owns admin passwords and documentation if we part ways?
Our MSP selection guide covers contracts in detail. Companies with West Coast offices can compare Seattle, Sacramento and San Francisco, or start from the managed IT services directory.
Common questions
How much do managed IT services cost in Portland?
Does the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act apply to small businesses?
It can. The law applies based on how many Oregon consumers' data you handle, 100,000 or more, or 25,000 or more with at least 25% of revenue from selling data, and it has no small-business exemption 14. Nonprofits are covered too. Confirm your status with counsel.
What does Oregon require after a data breach?
Is IT support in Portland more expensive than the national average?
Should a Portland IT company be able to come on site?
Yes, if you run equipment that cannot be fixed over a remote session. Password resets and software problems rarely need a visit, but a manufacturer's line PCs or a clinic's exam-room devices usually do. Ask each provider how often on-site visits happen and whether they are billed separately.
What is a managed service provider?
A managed service provider is an outside firm that runs your IT on an ongoing monthly contract, including support, patching, backups and security. Our guide to what an MSP does explains the model.
