The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, El Paso, TX: $82,370) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Business email compromise (BEC)
- Business email compromise is a fraud in which a criminal takes over or imitates a trusted email account, such as a supplier, carrier or executive, to trick a company into wiring money or changing payment details to an account the criminal controls.
Managed IT services in El Paso: costs
Per-employee pricing is the norm 12, but plenty of El Paso warehouses get quotes per device instead; Kaseya's 2023 survey found $50 to $100 a device each month the most frequent band 5.
El Paso wages sit under the national level. The May 2025 metro median was $82,370 for a systems administrator and $52,370 for a user support specialist 36, while administrators nationally earned a median $99,130 4. With benefits at 30% of total compensation 7, our math puts one El Paso administrator near $117,700 annually. One person cannot cover vacations, nights and every skill, though, and a firm that wants dependable coverage usually ends up needing two hires, roughly $192,500 with benefits. A 25-person office on a managed plan pays $30,000 to $75,000. What pushes a quote higher or lower is explained in our managed IT price guide.
Border trade, Fort Bliss and El Paso's business base
Fort Bliss and cross-border trade shape El Paso's economy. The base is the metro's largest employer, with 47,628 employees in City of El Paso data for 2024, HUD reports 8. The Texas Comptroller estimates Fort Bliss-affiliated personnel added at least $27.9 billion to the Texas economy in 2023 9. On the trade side, the El Paso customs district handled more than $151.7 billion in goods in the 12 months ending June 2024, up 15%, with nearshoring in northern Mexico adding freight and logistics work 8.
BLS preliminary counts for August 2026 show 80,200 jobs in trade, transportation and utilities and 70,900 in government across the metro 10. El Paso County had 16,280 business establishments in 2023, 3,863 with 10 to 49 employees and 849 with 50 to 249 11. A mere 143 county businesses were filed by Census under computer systems design 22, software and consulting shops among them. That leaves a thin local pool of IT support companies for a county this size.
For customs brokers, freight forwarders, warehouses and manufacturers' support offices, IT failures show up as stalled shipments and misdirected payments. Systems that connect to carriers, customs filers and banks in two countries need tight access control and a clear record of who changed what.

Get my El Paso quotePayment fraud: the first cybersecurity risk for El Paso logistics firms
Business email compromise is the threat that matters most for El Paso firms that move freight and money. In 2025, 24,768 business email compromise complaints reached the FBI's IC3, with about $3.05 billion lost 12. A common version: a criminal takes over or imitates a carrier's or supplier's mailbox, then sends new bank details just before a large invoice is due.
Controls that stop it:
- MFA on every mailbox, so a stolen password alone is useless
- Filtering that flags messages from lookalike domains
- A firm rule: new payment details get a phone check on a number you already had
- EDR and restore-tested backups for the ransomware that often comes next
In Microsoft's research, MFA cut account compromise risk by 99.22% 13. If a fraudulent wire just left, phone your bank right away, ring your cyber insurer's hotline if you carry a policy, and file a report with the FBI at ic3.gov 12. Texas rules for El Paso businesses
Once a business determines a breach occurred, affected individuals must be notified within 60 days, and when 250 or more Texans are affected the Attorney General also gets an online filing within 30 days 1415. A logistics, payroll or records company that only holds data for its clients has a separate duty: it must alert the data owner immediately after discovering a breach 14.
In effect since July 1, 2024, the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act exempts businesses that count as small under SBA standards, apart from a consent requirement before selling sensitive data 16. Larger distributors and manufacturers should look up their SBA size standard rather than assume they are exempt.
Documented security also has a courtroom payoff in Texas. SB 2610 took punitive (exemplary) damages off the table, starting September 1, 2025, for companies under 250 employees whose security program satisfied the new chapter when the breach happened 17. Statewide, 97,912 IC3 complaints carried $1.83 billion in reported losses for 2025, which averages roughly $18,600 each (our arithmetic) 12. Details are on our Texas data breach law page.
Defense suppliers: CMMC Level 1 and what applies now
Small El Paso suppliers that handle Federal Contract Information on a DoD contract are looking at CMMC Level 1: an annual self-assessment and affirmation against the 15 security requirements in FAR 52.204-21 18. In its regulatory impact analysis, DoD estimated a small business's cost to support that self-assessment at $5,977 19. Firms that receive Controlled Unclassified Information carry the heavier NIST SP 800-171 requirements.
Timing is uncertain. On July 13, 2026 DoD froze the program at Phase 1 and set no restart date for third-party certification 1820. Self-assessments remain, and the department says it will keep enforcing the DFARS 252.204-7012 clause and NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 1820. Check your contract terms with your contracting officer or counsel, and see our CMMC Level 1 guide.
Co-managed support and what to ask El Paso providers
An El Paso firm with its own IT employee can hand monitoring and after-hours calls to a co-managed provider. Meriplex's 2026 pricing for that service is $45 to $175 per employee monthly 21; more on co-managed IT.
Before signing with a managed service provider, ask:
- Can you support offices or partners on both sides of the border, and in Spanish?
- How quickly can a technician reach a warehouse or plant when a scanner network goes down?
- Will payment verification and lookalike-domain alerts be part of the plan?
- How do we get our data and passwords back if we leave?
The full checklist is in how to pick an MSP. For operations elsewhere in the region, see Albuquerque, Tucson and Lubbock, or browse the managed IT services hub.
Common questions
What do El Paso companies pay for IT support?
What does a managed service provider in El Paso do for a logistics firm?
It handles help desk requests, device and server upkeep, patching, backups and security monitoring for a monthly fee. For El Paso logistics and trade firms, a good provider also sets up email protections and payment verification steps against invoice fraud.
How can an El Paso company stop invoice and payment fraud?
Turn on MFA for every mailbox, filter lookalike domains, and confirm any change in bank details by calling a number already on file. FBI figures put 2025 business email compromise losses near $3.05 billion 12.
Does CMMC apply to small El Paso defense suppliers?
It can. Suppliers handling Federal Contract Information may be asked for CMMC Level 1, an annual self-assessment against 15 requirements 18. The third-party certification requirement has been paused since July 2026, but DFARS 252.204-7012 still applies 20. Confirm with your contracting officer or counsel.
