IT services for Columbus's university, government and insurance employers
Columbus has an unusually mixed employer base. The Ohio State University is the largest employer, followed by OhioHealth and the State of Ohio 9. JPMorgan Chase and Nationwide Mutual Insurance rank among the top five 9, giving the area a large finance and insurance presence. HUD's list dates from 2020.
In August 2026 the metro had 225,700 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 189,100 government jobs, 187,500 professional and business services jobs and 186,300 in education and health services 8. The logistics base is easy to miss: warehouses and distributors depend on scanners, shipping systems and networks that cannot go down during a shift.
Franklin County had 30,700 employer establishments in 2023, including 8,207 with 10 to 49 employees and 2,263 with 50 to 249 6. It had 643 establishments in computer systems design and related services 7, a count that includes developers and consultants as well as support firms.
Common IT needs here:
- Insurance agencies and financial firms: identity controls, encryption and vendor oversight.
- Clinics tied to the health systems: HIPAA safeguards; see our HIPAA compliance services guide.
- Distribution and logistics: uptime, network segmentation and fast on-site response.

Get my Columbus quoteOhio rules: the Data Protection Act safe harbor and the 45-day breach deadline
Ohio's most useful cybersecurity law for business owners is a reward, not a mandate. The Ohio Data Protection Act (Ohio Rev. Code chapter 1354) took effect November 2, 2018 10. Under it, a company sued in tort over a breach can raise an affirmative defense, provided it had written down, kept up and actually followed a security program that reasonably conforms to an accepted framework 10. Frameworks named include the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST SP 800-171 and 800-53, the CIS Controls and ISO/IEC 27000 10.
The practical upshot for Columbus firms: the documentation a good provider produces, such as policies, risk assessments, patch records and access reviews, is the same evidence you would need to claim the defense. Ask any provider which framework it maps its work to. Whether the defense fits your facts is a question for counsel.
Separately, the breach statute gives Ohio businesses at most 45 days from discovery to notify affected residents, and asks for faster notice where possible 11. Ohio does not require Attorney General notice, but consumer reporting agencies must be told if more than 1,000 residents are notified 11. Ohio has no comprehensive consumer privacy law as of October 2026 12.
In the FBI's 2025 report Ohio ranked eighth for complaints, with 27,626, and reported losses of about $421.3 million 13.
Cybersecurity services in Columbus
Cybersecurity services in Columbus should be bought against a framework, given the Ohio safe harbor. For a small office the core is MFA, managed endpoint detection and response, email filtering, tested backups and training. Mainstream MDR is priced per device, at $8 to $25 each month 14.
The framework piece is where many firms fall short. NIST released Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 in February 2024 with six functions, including a new Govern function, and published a quick-start guide for small businesses 15. A provider or part-time vCISO can map your controls to it; published vCISO retainers run about $1,500 to $4,000 a month for firms under 50 employees 16.

IT consulting and co-managed IT in Columbus
IT consulting in Columbus is often the fastest way to get a written security program in place: a consultant documents policies, maps controls to a framework and leaves a roadmap. Published external consultant rates run $150 to $250 per hour 17.
For ongoing work, firms with an internal IT person can use co-managed IT, where a provider adds monitoring, tools and after-hours coverage. That support typically costs $45 to $175 per user monthly in one provider's published pricing 20. Our co-managed IT guide shows how to split responsibilities.
Choosing an IT company in Columbus
Ask Columbus providers questions that test both service and documentation:
- Which security framework do you map your work to, and will we receive the written program?
- How quickly can a technician reach our site, and is that included?
- Who handles breach notices if something happens, and how do you preserve logs?
- If we end the contract, how do we get our credentials, records and backups?
Our guide to choosing an MSP covers pricing models and contract traps. If you have staff elsewhere, see our pages on managed IT in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, or visit the managed IT services overview.
