Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN: $96,110) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Managed IT services
Managed IT services are an arrangement in which a business pays a provider a monthly fee to support its staff, keep its devices, network and cloud systems maintained and secured, and handle backups.

Managed IT services in Louisville: price ranges

Louisville businesses should plan on $100 to $250 per user per month for managed IT, based on current published pricing guides 12. The spread comes from scope: help desk and monitoring sit near the bottom, while round-the-clock security monitoring, compliance documentation and on-site visits push toward the top.

Compare that with local pay. In the Louisville/Jefferson County KY-IN area, the May 2025 median wage was $96,110 for network and computer systems administrators and $57,620 for computer user support specialists 56. Benefits run 30% of private-industry compensation 7, making the loaded cost about $137,300 and $82,300 a year (our calculation).

A 25-person company spends $30,000 to $75,000 a year on a managed plan, less than a single help desk hire. Break-fix help at $75 to $250 per hour 1 tends to suit only the smallest offices. Our managed IT pricing guide explains what is usually included.

Louisville's health care and logistics economy and its IT needs

Louisville runs on health care and logistics. UPS is the area's largest employer with 25,150 workers at its hub at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, and Ford (13,000) and GE Appliances (8,100) are the largest manufacturers 8. HUD calls Louisville a regional health care center, anchored by Norton Healthcare (14,400), UofL Health (13,200) and Baptist Healthcare System (9,025), with health insurer Humana employing 11,250 in the area 8.

In August 2026 the metro had 160,700 trade, transportation and utilities jobs, 115,400 education and health services jobs and 81,100 manufacturing jobs out of 712,700 4.

Jefferson County held 20,164 business establishments in 2023, including 5,156 with 10 to 49 employees and 1,315 with 50 to 249 9. Many are suppliers, clinics and service firms tied to those large employers, and their IT needs follow:

  • Health care: practices, billing companies and vendors working with hospitals or an insurer handle protected health information and need HIPAA safeguards. A business associate must report a breach to the covered entity without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 days after discovery 10, one of the duties in our HIPAA compliance services guide.
  • Logistics and distribution: warehouse systems, scanners and dispatch software need uptime and fast recovery. Our backup and disaster recovery guide covers recovery targets.
  • Manufacturing suppliers: segmented plant networks and patching that respects production schedules.

Kentucky's Consumer Data Protection Act and breach notification

The Kentucky Consumer Data Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026. It applies to businesses that control or process personal data of at least 100,000 Kentucky consumers a year, or at least 25,000 while earning more than 50% of gross revenue from selling personal data 311. There is no general small-business exemption, though the thresholds leave most small Louisville firms out. Retailers, service companies with large customer databases and consumer apps should check their numbers.

Kentucky's breach statute applies more broadly. Businesses must notify affected Kentucky residents in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 12. The statute requires no Attorney General notice, but when more than 1,000 people are notified at one time, the consumer reporting agencies must be told 1213.

Louisville firms with staff or customers across the Ohio River can face two procedures for one incident. Take a distributor with a warehouse in southern Indiana whose HR system is breached, exposing records for 120 Kentucky employees and 80 Indiana employees. Kentucky requires letters to its 120 residents without unreasonable delay and no Attorney General filing 12. Indiana requires notice to its 80 residents within 45 days of discovery and a disclosure to the Indiana Attorney General whenever residents are notified 13. The incident plan should list both steps; confirm the details with counsel. Our Indianapolis managed IT page covers the Indiana side.

Kentuckians filed 9,414 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025 and reported $119.7 million in losses 14.

Cybersecurity services in Louisville

The first security purchases for a Louisville business should be MFA, endpoint detection and response, email filtering and backups proven by a restore test. CISA tells small firms to enforce MFA with technical controls and regularly test partial and full restores 15.

Endpoint-based managed detection and response for small firms is commonly priced at $8 to $25 per device each month 16. Health care firms should also track HHS's proposed Security Rule changes, which would require MFA, encryption of health data and annual compliance audits; the rule is still proposed, not final 1718. Our cybersecurity for small business guide covers the controls that apply to every Louisville office.

Co-managed IT and choosing a Louisville provider

Louisville organizations that keep an IT person on staff can add co-managed support for monitoring, security and after-hours coverage. Budget $45 to $175 per user per month, the spread in one provider's 2026 estimate 19. Our co-managed IT explainer shows who handles what.

When you compare providers, ask three things: will they sign a business associate agreement, how fast can a technician reach sites on both sides of the river, and how do you get your data back if you leave. If your operation runs overnight shifts tied to the UPS air hub 8, ask whether the after-hours line reaches a technician or a voicemail box, and what an overnight on-site visit costs. Jefferson County had 290 establishments in computer systems design and related services in 2023 21, including software and consulting firms. A local address does not guarantee local staff, so ask each candidate how many technicians it has in the county. Take our checklist for choosing an MSP into each sales meeting.
