The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, New Orleans-Metairie, LA: $91,570) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- HIPAA business associate
- In HIPAA terms, a business associate is any outside company that handles patient information for a medical provider or health plan, and an IT firm that can log in to a clinic's email, servers or backups is a common example.
IT support in New Orleans: what managed plans cost
At that per-staff-member rate 12, a 20-person New Orleans office spends $2,000 to $5,000 every month on fully managed IT. Practices that want round-the-clock detection or heavier compliance work often pay more, with some security-inclusive plans at $300 or more per user 9.
Now the payroll route. New Orleans-Metairie systems administrators had a May 2025 median of $91,570 10. Divide that by 0.70 to add benefits at the 30% share BLS reports in private industry 11 and one person costs about $130,800 a year in our estimate, compared with $30,000 to $75,000 to put 25 staff on a managed plan. Support bought by the hour, no contract, lists at $75 to $250 1.
What each per-person plan ought to cover is set out in our managed IT cost guide.
New Orleans health systems, hotels and the port
Healthcare leads the New Orleans job market. HUD lists Ochsner Health (22,000 employees) and LCMC Health (17,000) as the largest private employers, followed by Tulane University (4,100) 3. Preliminary August 2026 data show 97,900 metro jobs in education and health services, more than the 66,300 in leisure and hospitality 12.
Tourism and shipping shape the rest. HUD cites 17.53 million visitors spending $9.1 billion in the area in 2022 3. A Martin Associates study of 2024 activity found cargo through the New Orleans Port District supported $101.5 billion in US economic value and 122,386 Louisiana jobs, and the port handled a record 1.2 million cruise passenger movements 13.
What that means for IT buyers:
- Clinics, labs, billing and staffing firms working for Ochsner or LCMC hold patient data, so HIPAA safeguards and a signed BAA are table stakes.
- Hotels, restaurants and tour operators need card systems and guest Wi-Fi kept apart from office systems. See our hospitality IT guide.
- Freight forwarders, terminal vendors and customs brokers move payments by email and need fraud controls.
In 2023 Orleans Parish counted 10,027 business establishments; 2,288 had 10 to 49 employees and 514 had 50 to 249 14.

Get my New Orleans quoteHIPAA and Louisiana breach rules for New Orleans practices
A New Orleans practice that loses patient data can owe notice under federal and state law on parallel clocks. On the federal side, patients must hear without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 calendar days after discovery 6, and HHS is notified at the same time whenever 500 or more people are involved 7. Louisiana runs its own clock for residents: no later than 60 days after discovery 4.
The step practices miss is the Attorney General. Under an AG rule, the Consumer Protection Section must get written notice, including the names of all Louisiana residents affected, within 10 days of the resident notice 8. Late notice can cost up to $5,000 per violation, with each day counted separately 8. This applies even to a breach affecting one person, and residents can sue for actual damages that late notice causes 23.

Louisiana's new privacy law and fraud figures
The Louisiana Data Privacy Act was signed May 29, 2026 and takes effect January 1, 2027 15. A business is covered if it meets any one test: over $25 million in annual revenue, processing of data on 75,000 or more consumers, households or devices, or 50% or more of its revenue from selling personal data 15. A large hotel group or regional health vendor could meet one of those tests; most small offices will not.
IC3, the FBI's internet crime unit, logged 8,623 Louisiana complaints for 2025 and about $105.4 million in losses 16.
Cybersecurity services in New Orleans
For a New Orleans clinic or hotel office, cybersecurity services should start with identity and email. Phishing topped the technical root causes of ransomware in Sophos's 2026 US survey 17, while Microsoft researchers measured a 99.22% drop in account compromise risk with MFA turned on 18. After that come EDR, which a 2026 analysis prices at $8 to $25 per device monthly for mainstream managed service 19, and backups proven by actual restores.
The proposed HIPAA Security Rule update would require MFA, encryption and written plans to restore key systems within 72 hours, but it is still only a proposal 2021. Hotels and restaurants should also keep card terminals patched and on their own network, and retire shared front-desk logins in favor of named accounts. Each control is covered on our HIPAA compliance support page and in cyber protection for small companies.
Choosing a managed service provider in New Orleans before hurricane season
Choose a New Orleans provider that can show you its business associate agreement, a sample risk analysis report and a hurricane plan before you sign. The hurricane plan should say where backups live, how staff work if the office is closed and how fast systems come back. Census filed 131 Orleans Parish establishments under the code for computer systems design and related services in 2023 5, with software developers mixed in. A firm that already employs an IT person can rent the missing tools and coverage through co-managed IT; Meriplex lists $45 to $175 per seat monthly 22.
Notice periods, data return and pricing caps belong on your checklist; our MSP selection guide walks through each. Firms with a second office along I-10 can compare Baton Rouge and Houston; for Tennessee operations, see Memphis. Our managed IT services hub indexes the rest of the country.
Common questions
What should a New Orleans practice or office pay for IT support?
Which extras should a New Orleans clinic require from its managed service provider?
Beyond the usual help desk, device and server care, patching, backups and basic security, a clinic needs HIPAA work: the provider signs a business associate agreement and assists with the practice's risk analysis.
Does a New Orleans clinic have to tell the Louisiana Attorney General about a breach?
Are managed IT services in New Orleans worth it for a hotel or restaurant group?
Usually, if you run several locations. A provider can keep card systems and guest Wi-Fi apart from office systems, manage updates across sites, and respond on site when a point-of-sale network goes down. Ask how on-site visits are billed.
Who does Louisiana's new privacy law cover?
From January 1, 2027, the Louisiana Data Privacy Act covers a business with over $25 million in annual revenue, one processing data on 75,000 or more consumers, households or devices, or one making 50% or more of its revenue from selling personal data 15. Most small New Orleans offices fall below all three; a lawyer can confirm where you stand.
