The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Providence-Warwick, RI-MA: $101,450) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

- Managed IT services
- Managed IT services are a subscription model for business IT: an outside provider supports users, maintains and secures devices and systems, and keeps backups running, billed monthly per user or per device.
What managed IT services cost in Providence
Most Providence businesses will see managed IT quotes of $100 to $250 per user per month, the range published 2026 pricing guides give for small and midsize firms 12. The low end usually means remote help desk and monitoring; the high end adds advanced security and regular planning meetings.
Hiring locally costs more than the national figure. The Providence-Warwick RI-MA area median for network and computer systems administrators was $101,450 in May 2025, against $99,130 nationally 69. Computer user support specialists earned a median $62,410 7. With benefits at 30% of private-sector compensation 8, those roles cost about $144,900 and $89,200 a year (our calculation).
A 25-person firm on a managed plan pays $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Small offices with few IT needs sometimes do fine with break-fix help at $75 to $250 an hour 1, but that model leaves nobody watching for problems between calls. Our managed IT pricing guide compares the options.
Providence County businesses and the state economy
Providence County had 16,414 business establishments in 2023, including 3,637 with 10 to 49 employees and 759 with 50 to 249 10. The county also had 172 establishments in computer systems design and related services, a Census category that includes MSPs along with software and consulting firms 11.
Metro-level job data for Providence was not available when we checked, so the figures below describe all of Rhode Island. Providence County is most of the state's economy, but read these as statewide numbers. In August 2026 Rhode Island had 116,600 education and health services jobs out of 515,100, about 23% of all jobs, plus 40,400 in manufacturing and 33,700 in financial activities 12.
That mix points to three common IT needs:
- Health care and education: HIPAA safeguards for practices and their vendors, covered in our HIPAA compliance services guide.
- Finance and tax preparation: the FTC Safeguards Rule requires MFA and encryption of customer data for non-bank financial firms, plus a written risk assessment once a firm holds data on 5,000 or more consumers 13.
- Manufacturing: segmented networks and planned patch windows.

Get my Providence quoteRhode Island's privacy law, breach rule and security program duty
The Rhode Island Data Transparency and Privacy Protection Act took effect January 1, 2026 414. It applies to for-profit businesses that, in the prior year, controlled or processed personal data of at least 35,000 Rhode Island customers, not counting payment-only data 414. A business with at least 10,000 customers is covered if more than 20% of its gross revenue came from selling personal data 414. There is no small-business exemption. In a state of Rhode Island's size, 35,000 customers is a lower bar than it sounds for a regional retailer, clinic group or service company.
Rhode Island's breach law has a fixed clock. Businesses must notify affected residents no later than 45 calendar days after confirming a breach 5. If more than 500 Rhode Island residents are notified, the Attorney General and the major credit reporting agencies must be notified as well 5.
Both laws can reach a small company. Consider a Providence County retailer with 30 employees and a loyalty program of 36,000 Rhode Island customers. That list crosses the privacy law's 35,000-customer line, and size offers no exemption 414. If the same list were breached and 600 customers received letters, the 45-day deadline would apply, and because more than 500 residents were notified, so would the Attorney General and credit agency notices 5. A provider can at least tell you how many customer records you hold and on which systems.
Separately, the Identity Theft Protection Act requires any business holding personal information to implement and maintain a risk-based information security program with reasonable security procedures appropriate to its size and scope 3. A managed IT contract should produce evidence for that program: an asset list, access controls, patch records and backup tests. Ask counsel what your program must cover.
Rhode Islanders filed 2,700 complaints with the FBI's IC3 in 2025 and reported $71.96 million in losses 15. The state ranks 47th by complaint count but 41st by losses 15, which works out to about $26,700 per complaint against about $20,700 nationally (our calculation from the same report).
Cybersecurity services for Providence firms
Providence firms get the most protection per dollar from MFA, endpoint detection and response, email filtering and restore-tested backups. Microsoft research found MFA reduced account compromise risk by 99.22% 16. Managed detection and response, priced per endpoint, typically adds $8 to $25 a month for each device 17.
Backups deserve a specific plan. One provider's 2026 guide puts managed backup for a 20 to 50 person business at $300 to $800 a month, or $500 to $1,200 with quarterly recovery testing 18. Full managed disaster recovery with defined recovery targets runs $1,000 to $3,000 a month in the same guide 18. Our cybersecurity for small business guide and backup and disaster recovery guide cover both.
Co-managed IT and choosing a provider in Providence
If you already employ an IT person, co-managed support adds monitoring and after-hours coverage. Pricing depends on how much the provider handles; one 2026 provider estimate spans $45 to $175 per user per month 19. Our co-managed IT page lists the duties to assign.
When comparing Providence providers, ask how quickly a technician can reach each site, how they would document your Rhode Island security program, and how you leave with your data if the relationship ends. Use our checklist for choosing an MSP to compare the finalists. Common questions
How much do managed IT services cost in Providence?
Does the Rhode Island privacy law apply to small businesses?
It can. The law has no small-business exemption and applies to for-profit businesses that processed personal data of 35,000 Rhode Island customers in the prior year, or 10,000 with more than 20% of revenue from selling data 4.
How long does a Rhode Island business have to report a breach?
Do Rhode Island businesses need a written security program?
State law requires businesses holding personal information to maintain a risk-based information security program suited to their size 3. Putting it in writing is the practical way to show you have one.
