The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Worcester, MA-CT: $100,790) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). - Written information security program (WISP)
- A written information security program (WISP) is the document Massachusetts regulation 201 CMR 17.00 requires of anyone that owns or licenses personal information about a state resident, setting out the safeguards the business uses to protect that information and kept current as systems change.
Managed IT services in Worcester: quotes and the Boston wage gap
Quotes to Worcester firms in the 10 to 100 employee range tend to land inside that per-seat band 12. Strategic Micro Systems places basic plans near $100 to $125 and security-heavy premium plans at $200 to $300 2. Multiply out for 25 people and the annual spend is $30,000 to $75,000.
Worcester pay sits between the national figure and Boston's. Worcester-area network and computer systems administrators had a $100,790 median in May 2025: a shade above the $99,130 national mark and roughly $16,000 under Boston's $116,770 37. BLS says benefits make up 30% of private-sector compensation 5, so we estimate one Worcester administrator at about $144,000 a year all in. Help desk specialists earn a $62,280 median 6.
That gap matters for firms weighing a Boston-based provider against a local one: local wages can affect provider pricing, so ask both for per-user quotes and compare scope line by line. Uncontracted repair work bills at $75 to $250 an hour 1. Our managed IT services pricing page lists what belongs in a standard plan.
Worcester's hospitals, colleges and life sciences plants
Health care dominates Worcester's employer list, and that shapes much of the local IT demand. HUD names UMass Memorial Health Care (16,350 employees), UMass Chan Medical School (6,000), Reliant Medical Group (2,800), Milford Regional Medical Center (2,400), Saint Vincent Medical Group (1,850) and Heywood Healthcare (1,700) among the area's largest employers 8. Education and health services made up 23% of nonfarm payrolls in the 12 months ending April 2023 8.
Two other groups round out the picture. The area's eight major colleges and universities enroll nearly 37,400 students, and higher education supports an estimated 18,800 jobs 8. Manufacturing averaged 34,200 jobs over the same 12 months, with growth expected among health care products firms 8. Waters Corporation had 1,800 employees, and WuXi Biologics expected to hire 250 people for a 200,000-square-foot biotech facility 8. The Hanover Insurance Group (1,600) also ranks in the top 10 8.
Worcester County had 19,181 business establishments in 2023, with 4,317 employing 10 to 49 people and 934 employing 50 to 249 4. Census placed 323 of them in computer systems design and related services 9; software developers and consultants share that code with support shops, so the pool of day-to-day providers is smaller.
For IT buyers this means three common profiles. Medical groups and their vendors need HIPAA safeguards. Labs and plants need uptime and controlled access to production systems. Offices serving the colleges face student-data and vendor security reviews.

Get my Worcester quoteMassachusetts breach rules and the WISP requirement
Massachusetts breach rules reach small Worcester firms as fully as large ones. Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 93H sends notice to three places at once: affected residents, the Attorney General, and the Director of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, as soon as practicable and without unreasonable delay 10. A single affected resident is enough, and a business cannot hold notice until it knows the final count 10.
A few details catch Worcester firms by surprise:
- The resident letter has limits. It may not describe the nature of the breach or the number of people affected 13.
- Social Security numbers trigger credit monitoring. The business must offer at least 18 months of free monitoring and may not ask residents to waive their right to sue 11.
- Encryption helps only if it is strong. Data encrypted at 128 bits or higher is exempt unless the key was also taken 1021.
- Penalties are per violation. The Attorney General can sue under chapter 93A, with civil penalties of up to $5,000 for each violation 12.
The report to regulators must also say whether the business keeps a written information security program 13. That program is required by 201 CMR 17.00 for anyone that owns or licenses personal information about a Massachusetts resident 14. As of October 2026 the state still lacks a comprehensive consumer privacy law 15. For more, read our Massachusetts data breach rules and how to write a WISP.
Cybersecurity services for Worcester's health care and plant suppliers
Worcester suppliers to hospitals and manufacturers should plan for their customers' security reviews, because attackers increasingly come in through vendors. The 2026 Verizon DBIR found a third party involved in 48% of breaches 20. A billing company, a lab equipment vendor or a staffing firm that connects to a health system is part of that risk.
HIPAA puts a clock on vendors too. A business associate must notify the covered entity of a breach without unreasonable delay and within 60 calendar days of discovery 18. A provider supporting such a vendor should help keep logs good enough to answer what was accessed.
Most Worcester firms start with multifactor sign-in, EDR, filtered email and encrypted laptops, each one documented in the WISP. Massachusetts residents filed 22,936 cybercrime complaints with FBI IC3 in 2025 and reported about $411 million lost 16. Detail on each control is in our cybersecurity basics for small firms and our HIPAA compliance support page.
Co-managed IT and recovery projects for Worcester labs and plants
Worcester labs, plants and larger practices often have an IT or controls person who knows the equipment, and co-managed IT keeps that person in charge. The outside firm supplies round-the-clock watching, the security stack and nights-and-weekends cover. Meriplex's 2026 estimate for that ranges from $45 to $175 a user monthly, set by scope 17. Typical divisions of labor are shown on our co-managed IT page.
Recovery planning is the usual first project for a plant. For a business of 20 to 50 people, one 2026 guide lists managed backup and disaster recovery at $300 to $1,200 monthly, and fully managed recovery with defined recovery targets at $1,000 to $3,000 19. That work can be bought as a one-time project before any monthly plan is signed.
Choosing a Worcester provider with WISP and HIPAA experience
Choose a Worcester provider that can show WISP and HIPAA experience and real on-site coverage across the county. Questions to ask:
- Can you show a sample WISP you helped a client maintain?
- If our clients include hospitals or practices, will you sign a BAA with us?
- How long does a technician take to reach Shrewsbury or Auburn, and is drive time billed?
- What happens to admin credentials and documentation if we leave?
Firms with sites across southern New England can line up costs in Boston, Providence and Hartford. Red flags in contracts are covered in our MSP buying checklist, and the full list of cities sits on the managed IT services main page.
Common questions
What does a Worcester office pay for IT support?
Is IT cheaper in Worcester than in Boston?
Staff pay is lower. The Worcester metro median for systems administrators was $100,790 in May 2025, against $116,770 in the Boston metro 3. Managed IT pricing follows the same published per-user range in both, so compare scope as well as price.
Can a managed service provider in Worcester keep our WISP current?
It should. On top of the help desk, device care, account management, backups and security a monthly plan covers, a provider can help keep the WISP current, since the regulation expects the program to be maintained over time 14.
What must a Worcester business do after a data breach?
As soon as practicable, it tells affected residents, the Attorney General and the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, even if only one resident is involved 10. Exposed Social Security numbers also mean offering 18 months of credit monitoring 11. Counsel can confirm the steps for your case.
Does a small Worcester business need a WISP?
What IT services do Worcester health care vendors need?
Usually HIPAA-aligned access control, encryption, logging and a signed business associate agreement with their IT provider. Business associates must report breaches to the covered entity within 60 days of discovery 18.
