Plan prices are one provider's published 2026 tiers (Strategic Micro Systems, Managed IT Services Cost Per User: A 2026 Pricing Guide). The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI: $102,790) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

Minnesota breach notice rule: notify affected residents without unreasonable delay, with no fixed number of days. No notice to a state agency is required. The full rule and statute link are in our Minnesota data breach notification law summary.

Managed IT services
Managed IT services are a standing agreement under which an external provider monitors, maintains, secures and supports a company's technology for a recurring fee, so problems are prevented or fixed without separate invoices for each repair.

Managed IT services in Minneapolis: costs against local salaries

Managed IT in Minneapolis generally costs $100 to $250 per user per month, the small business range in published provider guides 1. Out-of-contract hourly work runs $75 to $250 1.

The in-house comparison uses Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington wages. A network and computer systems administrator earned a median $102,790 in May 2025 and a computer user support specialist $64,890 23. Benefits were 30% of private employer compensation in June 2026 4, which puts the sysadmin at about $146,800 a year including benefits and the help desk role at about $92,700, based on BLS data.

Even the help desk hire alone costs more than managed IT at the top of the range for 25 users. The trade-off is control and presence: an employee is in the building every day. Many Twin Cities firms get both by keeping one internal person and buying the rest. Our managed IT pricing guide walks through each line of a typical quote.

The Minneapolis market: health systems, med tech and corporate headquarters

Hennepin County had 40,486 business establishments in 2023, of which 9,492 had 10 to 49 employees and 2,705 had 50 to 249 5. It also had 1,236 establishments in computer systems design and related services 6; that group includes MSPs but also software and consulting firms.

HUD lists the State of Minnesota, Fairview Health Services and Target Corporation as the metro's largest employers 8. It also places Minneapolis in the Medical Alley health technology region and notes that Medtronic has its operational headquarters in the city 8. In August 2026 the metro had 398,100 education and health services jobs, 293,300 professional and business services jobs, 204,200 manufacturing jobs and 141,100 financial activities jobs, out of 2,028,500 nonfarm jobs (preliminary) 7.

That mix produces some recurring IT needs:

  • Clinics, therapy groups and health IT vendors that handle patient data and sign business associate agreements.
  • Medical device suppliers and contract manufacturers that must protect design files and control vendor access to plant systems.
  • Firms serving large corporate headquarters that face long security questionnaires before they can win or renew work.

Our healthcare IT guide covers patient-data setups in more depth.

Minnesota privacy and breach rules

The Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act took effect July 31, 2025. It applies to businesses that control or process personal data of 100,000 or more Minnesota consumers a year, or 25,000 or more while earning over 25% of gross revenue from selling personal data 9. Businesses that are small under the U.S. Small Business Administration definition are excluded, but even they may not sell a consumer's sensitive data without prior consent 9. The Minnesota Attorney General publishes guidance for businesses 10.

Minnesota's breach law is less specific about timing than most. Businesses must notify affected residents in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 11. The statute has no Attorney General notice requirement, but if more than 500 people are notified at once, consumer reporting agencies must be told within 48 hours 11.

Healthcare firms also follow HIPAA. Individuals must be notified of a breach of unsecured health information no later than 60 calendar days after discovery 13. The proposed HIPAA Security Rule update from January 2025 is still only a proposal; the current rule remains in effect 14.

The two regimes can stack. Say a Twin Cities therapy group's billing system exposes records for 600 Minnesota patients. HIPAA requires individual letters within 60 days of discovery, plus notice to prominent media outlets because more than 500 residents of one state are affected 13. If the same data falls under Minnesota's breach statute, the 48-hour deadline for telling consumer reporting agencies also applies, since more than 500 people are notified at once 11. A provider that keeps access logs can show exactly which records were touched, and that list drives every notice. Have counsel confirm which duties apply.

Cybersecurity services in Minneapolis

The cybersecurity services Minneapolis firms need most are the ones that answer customer security audits: MFA, endpoint detection and response, logging, vulnerability management and tested backups. Med tech suppliers and firms serving large companies face those audits because of vendor risk. The 2026 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report found third-party involvement in 48% of breaches 17.

Minnesota recorded 13,595 complaints to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025, with $249 million in reported losses 12. The IC3 counts complaints filed rather than individual victims. One provider's 2026 guide puts managed backup with quarterly recovery testing at $500 to $1,200 a month for a 20 to 50 person company 16. Our HIPAA compliance services guide and small business cybersecurity guide set out what to ask for. With an incident in progress, phone your insurer's cyber hotline if you have coverage, file a report at ic3.gov, and do not wipe anything until evidence has been preserved.

IT consulting and co-managed IT in Minneapolis

Many Minneapolis mid-sized firms already have an IT manager, which makes co-managed IT a common choice: the provider supplies tooling, a security operations layer and after-hours cover. Co-managed IT runs $45 to $175 per user per month in one provider's published 2026 estimate 15. Our co-managed IT guide describes how the work divides, and our IT consulting page covers one-time projects such as a network redesign or a compliance gap review.

Choosing a managed service provider in Minneapolis

Test a Minneapolis provider on coverage, regulated data and exit terms. Ask where technicians work from in the Twin Cities and how they handle locations in Omaha, Milwaukee or Chicago. Ask whether they will sign a business associate agreement and support customer security questionnaires. Get offboarding terms in writing. Our guide to choosing an MSP and the managed IT services overview give the full picture.

Common questions

How much do managed IT services cost in Minneapolis?

Twin Cities quotes usually track published provider guides, which put managed IT at $100 to $250 per user per month 1. A 25-person office would spend roughly $30,000 to $75,000 a year. Hourly work typically costs $75 to $250 1.

What does IT support staff cost in Minneapolis?

A Minneapolis-area help desk specialist earned a median $64,890 in May 2025 and a systems administrator $102,790 23. With benefits, that is about $92,700 and $146,800 a year, based on BLS data 4.

Does the Minnesota Consumer Data Privacy Act apply to my company?

It applies if you process data on 100,000 or more Minnesota consumers a year, or 25,000 or more with over 25% of revenue from selling data 9. SBA-defined small businesses are excluded, except they still need consent to sell sensitive data 9.

What is the data breach deadline in Minnesota?

Minnesota sets no fixed number of days. Notice must go out in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay 11. If more than 500 people are notified at once, consumer reporting agencies must be told within 48 hours 11.

What IT services do Minneapolis medical device suppliers need?

They usually need protected design data, controlled vendor access, logging and documentation for customer audits. Third parties were involved in 48% of breaches in the 2026 Verizon report 17, so large customers check suppliers closely.

Can a Minneapolis managed service provider work with our IT manager?

Yes. Co-managed IT keeps your manager in charge while the provider adds tools and coverage. One published 2026 estimate is $45 to $175 per user per month 15.
