The in-house figure is the median salary for network and computer systems administrators (BLS OEWS May 2025 via O*NET OnLine, Anchorage, AK: $96,420) divided by 0.70, because benefits are 30% of total compensation (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, June 2026). This is our calculation. Licenses, hardware and projects are extra either way, and one person cannot cover every hour.

IT services in Anchorage: managed IT costs and local pay
Quotes for Anchorage managed IT should sit inside the per-user monthly band from 2026 provider guides 12, which for 25 people adds up to $30,000 to $75,000 in a year. Anchorage firms that prefer to pay per call face published hourly rates from $75 up to $250 1, and travel to sites outside town can add to that.
Anchorage wages cut both ways. Local help desk technicians earned a $64,720 median in May 2025, more than their national counterparts, while systems administrators made $96,420, a bit below the U.S. median 378. Adding benefits, which BLS sets at 30 cents of every private compensation dollar 9, lifts those to about $92,500 and $137,700, our own arithmetic.
For most Anchorage offices under 50 people, one help desk employee costs more than 25 managed seats at $250 each and leaves a single person as the only line of support. See managed IT tiers and what each includes.
Anchorage's economy: air cargo, the military and public employers
Air freight and logistics give Anchorage its economic signature. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport ranks No. 1 among U.S. cargo airports and No. 3 in the world in the latest Airports Council International rankings 5. Preliminary August 2026 BLS data put trade, transportation and utilities on top with 41,100 of the metro's 185,500 nonfarm jobs, ahead of education and health (34,100), government (30,400), leisure and hospitality (22,900) and professional and business services (21,700) 10.
Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson covers 85,000 acres with $15 billion in infrastructure. Its host unit, the 673d Air Base Wing, has more than 5,500 military and civilian personnel, and the base is headquarters of the 11th Airborne Division 11. Local officials are preparing for an expected $7 billion in military spending at JBER over five years, along with about 2,500 more military families 6. The money is tied to a defense budget bill not yet signed as of August 2026 6. If that money arrives, construction, engineering, housing and service contractors would likely feel it first.
The Municipality of Anchorage counted 8,799 business establishments in 2023; 2,068 had between 10 and 49 on payroll and 420 had 50 to 249 12. Just 111 carried the Census computer systems design code 13, so buyers may also weigh providers based outside Alaska, which makes on-site coverage the first question.

Get my Anchorage quoteRemote support and on-site coverage in Alaska
Distance shapes IT support in Anchorage more than in most cities. Routine work such as patching, monitoring and password resets runs through remote monitoring tools, so a provider's address matters little for daily tickets. It matters a great deal when a firewall dies, a switch fails at a warehouse near the airport, or a field office elsewhere in the state loses its link.
Settle these points before signing:
- Where the nearest technician lives, and the on-site response target for Anchorage and any remote sites
- Whether spare firewalls and switches are kept in Anchorage
- Support hours in Alaska time, since a Seattle or Portland provider keeping 8 to 5 Pacific hours closes at 4 p.m. Anchorage time
- How backups are stored, and how long a full restore would take over your connection
Out-of-state providers can work well for remote help desk and security monitoring when paired with a local firm or an employee for hands-on work. Our Seattle, Tacoma and Portland pages describe those markets.
Alaska breach and records disposal rules
Alaska gives no day count for breach notice. Residents must be told as fast as possible and without unreasonable delay, after allowing for police requests, sizing up the breach and restoring systems 14. To skip notice entirely, a business has to investigate, tell the Attorney General in writing, conclude that harm is not reasonably likely, and keep that written finding for five years 14. Notifying more than 1,000 Alaskans means the consumer reporting agencies hear too 15.
Printed files count, not only digital ones 14. Each resident left without notice can cost a business up to $500 in civil penalties, with a $50,000 ceiling 16.
Alaska also regulates how records are thrown away. A business disposing of records with personal information must take all reasonable measures against unauthorized access and adopt written disposal policies 17. Shredding paper, wiping or destroying drives so data cannot practicably be read, or hiring a records destruction firm after due diligence all qualify 17. A knowing violation can cost up to $3,000 17. Ask any provider how it wipes retired laptops and servers, and file the certificate.
No broad consumer privacy statute exists in Alaska as of October 2026 18; the last recorded step for HB 367, a 2026 bill, was a May 12, 2026 referral to House Finance 19. IC3 took 3,202 Alaska complaints in 2025 covering about $40 million in losses 20. Our Alaska notice law summary has the statute details; an Alaska attorney can say how they apply to you.
Defense contractors near JBER: CMMC and DFARS
Anchorage firms bidding on JBER construction, maintenance or service work face DFARS contract clauses today, but no third-party CMMC certificate. As of October 2026, CMMC sits in Phase 1: DoD suspended the move to Phase 2 on July 13, 2026 and has named no restart 2122. What continues is the paperwork already in contracts, meaning required self-assessments and the DFARS 7012 clause built on NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 2122. That clause gives a contractor 72 hours from discovery to report a cyber incident to DoD, and requires images of affected systems kept 90 days or longer 23.
If the expected JBER spending materializes, more local subcontractors may meet those clauses for the first time. A firm that starts with MFA, encrypted devices, a system security plan and an incident contact list will be ready sooner. Read CMMC basics for subcontractors and the Level 1 self-assessment, and check timelines with your prime, since the schedule may change.
Cybersecurity companies and co-managed IT in Anchorage
Backups carry extra weight in Anchorage because hands-on recovery help may be a flight away. Sophos's 2026 U.S. ransomware report, which covers organizations of 100 to 5,000 staff, found six in ten organizations with encrypted data restored it from backups, and average recovery cost hit $2.51 million 24. Hold one copy where ransomware cannot reach it, offline or immutable, and rehearse a complete restore.
When comparing a cybersecurity company in Anchorage with a remote one, ask which people see alerts overnight, whether endpoint detection is staffed around the clock, and how incidents escalate across time zones. Where an Anchorage firm already employs an IT person, co-managed service can supply monitoring and night coverage, priced from $45 to $175 a seat each month in Meriplex's 2026 estimate 25. Common questions
What do Anchorage businesses pay for IT services?
What does IT support in Anchorage cost if we hire someone?
Can a managed service provider outside Alaska support an Anchorage office?
Yes for most remote work, such as monitoring, patching and help desk tickets. Before signing, confirm on-site coverage for hardware failures, spare equipment stocked in Anchorage, and support hours in Alaska time; Census counted only 111 computer systems design establishments in the municipality in 2023 13.
Does Alaska set a deadline for breach notices?
Which services matter most from a cybersecurity company in Anchorage?
Staffed overnight alert monitoring comes first, followed by MFA rollout, endpoint protection and backups with tested restores. In Sophos's 2026 study, six in ten U.S. organizations whose data was encrypted recovered it from backups 24, so ask when the last full restore test ran.
